Jane the Virgin Season 2 Episode 3 Review: “Chapter Twenty-Five”

Jane the Virgin

This week’s Jane the Virgin has drama galore surrounding Mateo’s baptism. There’s danger, jealousy, and even another unplanned (sort of) pregnancy.

Following last week’s admission that she loves both Michael and Rafael, Jane busies herself with the details of Mateo’s baptism while she tries to figure things out. In the middle of this important milestone, Jane also learns that she got into grad school, and I have to admit I love her “Mommy got into grad school” dance. There’s a catch, though. Jane is missing a prerequisite class that she must make up immediately, but she doesn’t want to leave Mateo so soon. She may not have a choice because taking Mateo to class does not work out well (always put the brakes on a stroller). Jane’s Mommy and Baby group actually helps to put things in perspective, as do Xiomara and Alba. Ultimately, Jane decides to follow her dreams and pursues grad school. As if there was ever any doubt.

Petra’s pregnancy stuns Rafael, so much so that he accidentally okays Jane’s decision to make Michael Mateo’s godfather. Jane is understandably shocked when she hears of Petra’s pregnancy. Ever the schemer Petra decides to take a bold approach and leave the options about what to do about her pregnancy in Jane and Rafael’s hands. It’s a heavy burden which puts even more pressure on Jane. Nevertheless, Mateo’s baptism turns out beautifully and features flashbacks to both Jane and Xiomara’s baptisms that make me tear up. The events of the week make Jane realize that she can’t be the one to separate Rafael from his child or keep Mateo from his sibling, so Petra will stay in town with the baby and figure things out with Jane and Rafael. Somehow, I don’t see this working out the way Petra hopes it will, since Jane and Rafael end up kissing by the end of the episode.

Additionally, Jane the Virgin shows us that the Rogelio and Michael bromance is still going strong. Rogelio’s new position as executive producer of his show has given him even more confidence (and an even bigger head), which he uses to help Michael advance his cause with Jane. On Rogelio’s advice, Michael decides to take on a more confident and aloof demeanor with Jane. Let’s face it: Michael listening to Rogelio was always going to blow up in his face. Michael switches gears and decides to write down all of his opinions and support for Jane as a gift, which is so much more appreciated than a macho attitude. If only Rogelio’s confidence could work for others like it does for him.

But trying to help Michael isn’t the only thing that Rogelio is up to in this week’s Jane the Virgin. When a castmate he was supposed to do a love scene with gets into an accident, it is suggested that her slot be filled by Rogelio’s ex-wife, Luciana. As we’ve learned, Luciana cheated on Rogelio and broke his heart, so much so that it has interfered in his relationship with Xiomara. Xiomara tries to help Rogelio get over his heartache and give him the confidence to face Luciana again. Their reunion goes a little too well for Xiomara’a liking, and she’s tempted to bail but is instead honest with Rogelio about her jealousy. Wanting to honor his love for Xiomara, Rogelio chooses not to hire Luciana for the part. This comes back to bite him later when Luciana blackmails Rogelio with a mysterious video that causes him to loudly vocalize his horror.

Lastly, Luisa is missing in action from Miami this week, and no one really notices. Well, Rafael does, but he thinks that she is just on a bender. Luisa beleives that Rose is behind everything and, in her warped mind, thinks it is kind of romantic. That is until Luisa realizes that the men holding her are actually trying to smoke Rose out; they don’t work for her at all. So the only question is, who has Luisa?
