The strange allure of Teletubbies had to do with the fact that the creators were actively trying to make them more appealing to kids and somehow managed to do this with a great amount of success. To some the Teletubbies are kind of creepy and a little too out there for their liking. But to kids the Teletubbies were at one time, and still are in some cases, a pleasant show that doesn’t challenge the viewer too much but allows them to be carefree and innocent. There have been claims that the show wasn’t educational enough but really and truly it was made as a way to entertain kids and is continually open for interpretation.
An interesting note is that the Teletubbies’ show was filmed in a dome that was created just for the purpose of filming the indoor shots since there was no studio for this show. Also, the outside shots were kind of hard to film since the suits made it hard for the actors inside to walk along the grassy fields. It was also considered kind of difficult for children to relate to the Teletubbies at first since they were so huge in comparison to the kids. In many ways they seemed more like monsters than playful, fuzzy friends that wanted to entertain children. For adults they’ve been an oddity for some time or a favorite show that is turned on for their kids to enjoy. There have been a lot of mixed feelings about the Teletubbies throughout the years but many people couldn’t possibly give a reason as to why they’re unnerved by them.
It’s kind of strange to think that the creator likened the Teletubbies to astronauts with big, bulky bodies and oversized heads. That’s essentially where the idea came from and how they got their shape and form. While such a thing might seem odd to some people it appeared to be appealing for a while as a lot of kids took to liking the show and wanting to see more. It’s not the first time that children wanted to see actors in big, bright costumes after all, but it was one that seemed to get more mixed reviews from people than any other. Barney of course was one of the many that reached such high status that people were simply waiting for something to come along that would take the big purple dinosaur down a few notches. It’s a bit pathetic to think about debunking a figure that child look up but it’s happened to the Teletubbies as well.
The Teletubies were created to be a fun and engaging show for kids but as time went by more and more people tried to find a way to undermine them and prove that they didn’t have much to offer other than some bright colors and a cheerful manner. Many photographers were attempting to get a picture of the Teletubbies with their heads off, so the actors had to have a special screened-off area built so that they could do so without giving anything away. The allure of the show wasn’t quite enough to keep it from sparking a lot of heated debate over its worth.
