Arnold Schwarzenegger changed action films in the 80s. He was a new breed of actor that had never been seen before. Other than his ridiculously huge muscles that set him apart from every actor on the planet, what else was it about him that differentiated him from the rest of the pack? Was it the hilarious accent? Was it the cheesy one liners? Was it the spiked hair? Honestly I think it was all of these things but there might be a lot more to it all.
I think the closest thing we have today to Arnold is Dwayne Johnson. But Johnson isn’t at all trying to be Schwarzenegger. No one can be Arnold. This much we know. The closest thing to Arnold in the 80s was Sylvester Stallone but I think even these guys knew that it was OK to simply play on their side of the fence. “You take this section of action fans and I’ll take this one, or we’ll just share.”
