In the aftermath of last week’s whirlwind, this week’s Gotham episode, ‘Prisoners,’ continues the intense journey as Gordon faces torment in jail, and Oswald grows closer to his father, despite his family’s disapproval of their newest member.
Stripping Down the Storylines
While juggling multiple storylines hasn’t been a significant issue in recent episodes, it was refreshing to see ‘Prisoners’ focus primarily on Gordon’s and Oswald’s arcs. Sometimes, too many plots can be overwhelming, and this episode’s narrowed focus allowed for a more in-depth exploration of the characters’ struggles. Surprisingly, this turned out to be one of my favorite Gordon-centric episodes. There’s something about witnessing Gordon’s broken spirit and his journey to regain his strength that made this episode incredibly powerful.
Falcone to the Rescue
It was unexpected to see Bullock turn to Falcone, one of my all-time favorite characters from Season 1, for help. However, if anyone could get Gordon out of jail, it would be Falcone, given his extensive connections in Gotham City. The most poignant scene for Gordon was at the very end when his jail-buddy Puck succumbs to a brutal beating, serving as a reminder of why Gordon can’t leave Gotham. This moment solidified the episode as a standout Gordon-centric story.
Oswald’s Cinderella-esque Family Drama
Perhaps I’m the only one who noticed the similarities, but Oswald’s new family drama had a distinct Cinderella vibe, with Melinda Clarke’s character and the two siblings essentially acting as the wicked stepmother and evil stepsiblings. Although the brother and sister didn’t leave a lasting impression on me, as they felt somewhat generically evil, I was intrigued by Grace’s concern about Elijah allowing a criminal to live in their home. The most significant issue with this storyline was the writers’ decision to kill off Elijah so quickly.
A Fleeting Moment of Happiness for Oswald
I would have preferred to see Oswald experience happiness for at least a week or two before his father’s inevitable departure, whether through death or the revelation of a dark side. It was a delight to watch Reubens and Taylor share scenes, and now that opportunity is already gone. I understand that Oswald is a villain and, therefore, not entitled to a happy ending, but this version of Oswald deserves some happiness before he fully transforms into The Penguin that Batman will eventually battle.
Final Thoughts on ‘Prisoners’
Despite my issue with the abrupt end to the Cobblepot reunion, ‘Prisoners’ was a solid episode. It provided ample screen time for both Oswald and Gordon, who have taken a backseat since the introductions of Hugo Strange and Mr. Freeze in recent weeks.
