This footage of planes taking off and touching down in slow motion is simply a gorgeous site. Who would have ever thought back in the early days of civilization that mankind would have put their mark in the skies in such a way? The graceful manner in which airplanes lift off and then land is one that seems to defy nature in a very purposeful way. But the effect that creates is one of awed magnificence as you watch each slow motion landing or take off. Despite being big, bulky, and very, very heavy, the modern airplane is a wondrous design.
The idea of being able to ferry hundreds of people through the air in multiple airplanes is one that to the common person makes a lot of sense considering that almost all of us have grown up watching a plane soar across the sky. But think about the earlier days when the train, the automobile, the bus, or the boat were the only modes of transportation. Think of the days when instead of traveling abroad through the air you had to take a long, arduous journey across the ocean that would take days or even weeks depending on the speed of the craft and where you were going. Now you can be there in a matter of hours.
The grace and splendor of an airplane is harder to appreciate from inside the craft, even if you happen to be in first class. Those luxuries that are given to passengers to help enjoy their flight are all well and good but to be honest it’s a giant compartment in which many people share space. On the inside an airplane tends to show its many complexities, while on the outside it is a far more graceful-looking contraption. On the outside if you see the signs of turbulence it manifests as something that might resemble a great bird shaking itself now and again. From the inside, that same turbulence looks a little more chaotic as things shake and shimmy in response to the experience of wind shears and other normal phenomena.
Also, size is a big deal when looking from the outside versus the inside. When looking at a plane in motion it seems hard to imagine at times that it can fit so many people inside of it and yet still have room for everything else that is either vital or desired. Airplanes are very complex machines that run thanks to intricate systems that must be checked occasionally and maintained to keep running. While the planes of today are far more complex than those of the past they are also better equipped and have managed to minimize the space needed for certain operating systems so as to maximize the space needed for passengers and cargo.
It does help that the mechanics of an airplane have changed throughout the years in many different ways so as offer a much more efficient aircraft than ever before. The modern technology that allows these planes to operate is impressive, but not so much as the view of each one of them taking off and coming in for a landing.
