Every year there are a handful of photos that make it into the public realm that we see as being iconic. The photos are almost bigger than the issues they represent. They become mainstays in particular social and political movements. Last year the one photo that stood out to all that saw it was the photo below. His name is Omran Daqneesh. The image of him, bloodied and covered with dust, sitting silently in an ambulance awaiting help, is another stark reminder of the toll of the war in Syria and will always be the thing we remember about Aleppo.
Today another picture has arisen. It’s of a young girl scout who is protesting a Neo-Nazi march in Brno. I predict it will become one of the iconic photos of 2017. Not only is it a symbol of young females taking power over themselves but it’s also a reminder of the progress made in other countries. The Czech republic as a co-ed Scouts program. The U.S. still does not. How is this even possible? In any event, I wanted to post this photo because like I said, I think it’s one for the ages. And if it doesn’t become as prolific as I think it should be, at least I’ll have put in on this website.
