Benedict Cumberbatch is at it again as Patrick Melrose, a very troubled man that seems to have a laundry list of quirks that are bound to be embraced by many within the populace that think they have the same issues or can at least relate. Cumberbatch seems to have become one of the many actors that people love so much that they’ll watch just about anything he puts out and call it great. This performance however could be something unique, or at the very least something that people will be talking about once they watch it. He’s played some interesting characters in the past but this one should blow a few of them away with great ease.
He’s a master at raising the bar on his own performances, and it’s great.
5. He’s a high-functioning sociopath.
The character manages to sound magnanimous by introducing himself as a narcissistic schizoid suicidal alcoholic. Yet for all that he seems capable of being able to mingle with people and exist in society, so there’s something more to this character than is being shown in the preview, hard as that might be to believe since he seems to be putting it all out there.
4. He’s kind of odd.
I get the feeling we’re going to find out why and either be blown away or somehow disappointed by it since a lot of people watching the trailer might think from his mannerisms that it’s going to be something monumental. But then Rome wasn’t built in a day and mountains weren’t necessarily sprung forth from mole hills either. There’s something there, but we’ll have to watch and see.
3. He suffers from abuse.
As you can see in the trailer he doesn’t have the nicest father in the world since the man tends to think that whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. He also seems to think that this should apply to kids which is kind of hard to equate with a loving father. Whether his mother gets in on the abuse by offering a quiet neglect is unknown yet but again, we’ll see.
2. He comes from an upper-class family.
Any myth that states that education and wealth deny the possibility of abuse should be fairly tarnished and torn down by now like an old sheet that’s hung on the line for too long. Wealth and culture do not make the anyone more or less aggressive and in fact the manner in which this man acts seems to suggest that wealth only exacerbates the problem as it can make a great many things go away or remain unheard.
1. He’s an alcoholic.
Just because a man downs a martini and then asks for another only seconds before asking for a wine list wouldn’t make him an alcoholic. Though it would be a red flag to anyone that might serve him of course. Among the many other problems that he seems to have though this seems like one of the more minor issues that he at least enjoys and allows to drown out the problems if only for a little while.
This should be an interesting show.
