Currently, Michael Gracey should be best-known for being the director of The Greatest Showman, which is a period musical about P.T. Barnum, who is still remembered for having founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus. It is interesting to note that the movie was Gracey’s directorial debut, but it seems that he already has a number of other directorial jobs lined up for him. Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Michael Gracey:
Started Out in Visual Effects
It is interesting to note that Gracey started out as someone who worked with visual effects. For example, he served as a visual effects artist for The Genie from Down Under 2, which was an Australian TV show that was broadcast in 1998. Furthermore, Gracey has been a digital compositor for both Cubbyhouse and Double Vision, which are in addition to other roles with other projects.
Contributed to Ned Kelly
Speaking of which, Gracey was one of the people who worked on visual effects for Ned Kelly, which was an Australian movie about the man that came out in 2003. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Ned Kelly was one of the most famous bushrangers, who were Australian outlaws making a living by robbing people while using the Australian bush as their base of operations. In particular, Kelly is remembered because he went to his final shootout with the police while wearing a suit of bulletproof armor, with the result that he had to be subdued by being shot in the legs.
Got Involved in The Greatest Showman Via Hugh Jackson
Gracey became involved with The Greatest Showman via Hugh Jackson, who he had met when they were making a commercial together. With that said, it took years and years for the two to bring the movie to the movie screen because it was supposed to be an original musical with original songs, which meant bringing in more people to make it possible. For that matter, it should be noted that The Greatest Showman was a huge risk, not least because it wasn’t something with an established fan-base that could be translated into a source of viewers.
Chosen to Direct Naruto Adaptation
Curiously, Gracey has been chosen to direct an adaptation of Naruto, which started out as a Japanese manga about the titular character, who is a social outcast in a ninja village because a monstrous Nine-Tailed Fox that ravaged said village was sealed into him at around the time of his birth. It remains to be seen what will happen with the Naruto adaptation. Generally speaking, western adaptation of Japanese manga and anime don’t seem to do so well, but there could always be an exception to the rule.
Chosen to Direct Daughter of Smoke and Bone Adaptation
Furthermore, Gracey has been chosen to direct an adaptation of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which was the first book in a set of the same name. In short, said book is centered around a woman named Karou, who has been tasked with retrieving both human and animal teeth for the chimerical creatures who raised her. Said creatures are at war with angels, who are a source of complications for the protagonist throughout the series.
