On the outside Maria Bamford sounds like she might have been and still could be a very troubled individual. But when looking past that you can see that she’s a very funny person as well, if you happen to like her sense of humor. She’s definitely a skilled comedian and there’s nothing bad to say about her act, but the one thing that anyone might want to think about is that it is a little different. Of course that’s what makes stand-up comedy great, no act is like another and it gives you a better sense of who this person is and why they’re on stage doing what they do. Bamford seems to like to go for the overplayed shock angle at times but it gets her laughs so obviously it’s working.
Always do what works until it doesn’t and then move on.
5. She’s suffered with OCD.
She’s also been diagnosed as bipolar II so she’s got a double whammy when it comes to issues. Each one of these is treatable to a degree but it still has to be a rough time every now and again for those around her to really cope with it. For Bamford it has to be even harder trying to work past the feelings that come thanks to these two distinct disorders.
4. She tried to binge and called the suicide hot line.
I’ve heard of being able to eat enough to make your stomach burst, but it seems like the human body has a built in survival mechanism for pretty much anything. Vomiting would be what might prevent this, though if someone was motivated enough to do self harm it seems like it would still be possible. Still, this seems like it would undeniably painful.
3. She was the first female member of the Improverts.
This was the improvised comedy group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She transferred to the school in her junior year. After another year she transferred back to Minnesota where she graduated with a BA in creative writing. It might have been part of her plan but going all the way to Scotland for school and then coming home after a years seems a little compulsive.
2. A lot of her routine is about dysfunctional families, anxiety, and depression.
The one thing that you can almost always do when there’s nothing else you feel is possible is laugh. It might not always seem funny and cracking a smile might seem like the hardest thing in the world, but at least Bamford has managed to make a go at laughing away the pain of going through one thing after another in life that could have torn her down.
1. She stars in the show Lady Dynamite.
This is a Netflix show that is largely based around her life events and the things she’s gone through. Bamford asked if she could hang out with the writers and was allowed since she is the lead of the show. She didn’t want to change up the script at all she just wanted to hang out and voice her ideas and/or concerns about the script.
Maria Bamford, remember the name because she’s worth watching.
