Atomic Blonde is an American spy movie that premiered on March 12 and its expected to see its theatrical release on July 28. It is based on the graphic novel The Coldest City, which is about the efforts of a MI6 spy named Lorraine Broughton to uncover double agents being smuggled into the West on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall. As a result, movie-goers can expect not just plenty of action but more than a few twists on the classic spy movie formula.
Here are five things that we can expect from Atomic Blonde:
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron plays MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton. This should come as welcome news because the actress has won numerous awards and accolades for her acting, with examples ranging from an Academy Award for Monster to a Saturn Award for Mad Max: Fury Road. Better still, Theron’s career includes more than a few action roles, which bodes well for Atomic Blonde.
David Leitch
Atomic Blonde is directed by David Leitch, who has had an extensive career in the entertainment industries. For example, he has been a stuntman for Brad Pitt five times and Jean-Claude Van Damme two times, which is why he has two Screen Actors Guild Awards. So far, David Leitch is best-known as a director for John Wick, though it is interesting to note that he is the director for both Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
Plenty of Action
For those who have watched the Atomic Blonde trailers, it should come as no surprise to learn that it has plenty of action, which should come as welcome news to action movie fans. With that said, this fondness for fight scenes is not particularly surprising considering the director’s previous work on John Wick, which featured plenty of action as well.
Training
Unsurprisingly, that much action meant that the cast had to put a lot of effort into their training. For example, the director has stated that Theron got in three to four hours of training for four days a week for three months with 87Eleven, which is the same stunt team that helped out with John Wick. Fortunately, Theron’s background in dance mixed well with her work ethic, with the result that the movie-makers were actually able to expand the action scenes beyond what they had initially planned based on their expectations. Combined with the director’s statement that he wanted to push both cast and crew to their limits in the shooting of the action scenes, it seems reasonable to say that viewers can expect something interesting.
Unusual Love Interest
One of the changes that have been made during the adaptation process is the choice of a rather unusual love interest for the genre. In brief, Lorraine’s love interest is a French spy named Sandrine, who is played by Sofia Boutella of Kingsman fame. Theron has expressed positive sentiments on the basis that it is refreshing, while Leitch has defended it on the basis that it is meant to highlight how spies have few opportunities for making real connections, meaning that they have to reach out for such opportunities when the chance comes up.
