Divided States is a four part special TV event that premiered on A&E on 5 March. The program looks at the racial tensions that are making the headlines in the US and abroad. Some of the events that the show focuses on includes the incident on the MAX train in Portland where three people were killed and a fight between high school children in Pennsylvania. The shows promise to be very hard hitting and will certainly make for interesting viewing. Here are five reasons why you should definitely check the show out.
It Opens Your Eyes
Many people are completely unaware of the racial tensions that exist in their communities. This program shows that there is often a lot going on under the surface that people may choose to ignore. This program shows that there are divisions in almost every state and there is probably more going on in your neighborhood that you are not aware of. It may encourage viewers to start taking more notice of what is going on in their communities.
The Analysis Of Events Is Very In Depth
The show does not just look into specific examples of racial tension, it also looks at why they occur. A great deal of analysis is carried out into all the events that are covered by the show. This analysis covers the things that led up to a specific event and the reaction of the people involved and the wider community afterwards. This is the first time that such an in-depth analysis of these events has taken place on a national scale.
It Features People Who Were Actually Involved
Interviews are held with people that were actually involved in the events that the show covers. This gives a unique insight into how they perceived the things that happened and how they feel about it now. This is an insight that you may not be able to get from anywhere else and in some cases it is the first time that the people involved have spoken publicly. Listening to some of the accounts of eyewitnesses can be quite harrowing.
It Looks At The Wider Issues
There are often many other issues that are going on in communities where racial tension occurs. It could be that people are feeling the effects of poverty or they just don’t believe that the government cares about them at all. The show will look at all of these other factors and just how they contribute to the tensions that exist in communities. It will also look at things that need to change.
It Gives Us Hope
There are some hard hitting messages that the show addresses but this does not mean that it is all doom and gloom. There are a lot of lessons that can be learnt from how communities come together after tragic events happen in their area. The show can also be used as a teaching aid in schools to show the next generation that love and tolerance achieves so much more than hate.
