The Five Funniest Department Store Scenes in Movies

Department store scenes in movies are bound to be either funny or dramatic, there’s usually no other way to go. Well there is violent and weird but those tend to be over very quickly. The comedy of the department store is something that you really have to enjoy by stepping outside of the roles that are being used. Confused by that? Well if you’ve ever worked retail you either love it or hate it. Seeing it in a movie might make you roll your eyes or laugh uproariously since you happen to know what’s real and what would never be allowed in a thousand years. The trick is to forget that you’ve ever worked retail and just enjoy it as a movie, or realize that everything you’ve done in a retail shop is being parodied and just go with it.

If you’ve ever worked retail it’s not too hard to just laugh at the antics you see in movies.

5. Employee of the Month

Anyone that works at a big box store knows that a lot of the antics they pull in this film would likely get you fired, but as a comedy it’s one of the funniest films ever made. The back and forth drama between a box boy and a cashier to reach Employee of the Month status and possibly win the affections of a gorgeous new cashier take a lot of interesting twist and turns. Eventually though the jerk gets his comeuppance and the underdog wins the day.

4. A Christmas Story

There is a definite reason I avoid the malls when the holidays get that close, and the lineups to see Santa would be just one of them. Now obviously you don’t hear as many screaming kid as this representation shows but it’s funny all the same. Plus from the time period you can see a lot more kids wearing nice clothing and ties rather than parkas and colorful jackets and pants as you’d see now. Man things were different back then.

3. Elf

I would love to see one movie where Will Ferrell doesn’t yell or even raise his voice. Something tells me it’s out there but I have yet to find it. Why this movie is one of the number one Christmas movies of all time is still a mystery to me but oh well, to each their own. Personally I think Ferrell just needs too much help when he’s the lead versus when he’s a supporting character, but he does have a few notable names in here to work with.

2. Mannequin

How great of a job would this be? All night long you’d get to work on your designs and bring out the greatest window showcases that anyone had ever seen, and you’d get to do with the woman of your dreams. At least, that is, until someone walked by and she turned back into a mannequin again. That would kind of be a downer to be honest, but to have the whole run of the store would be pretty cool.

1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This would be one of the lasts spots I’d want anyone in my family to catch me. Of course I’d look at what she was showing me, I’m a man and attracted to women so yes, it’d be enticing. But the moment a family member caught me it’d be like falling into a large bucket of ice water. Thank you, no, just looking, and moving on.

I’d love to see a few more department store scenes covering Black Friday. Someone could make a spoof and create an adventure-type film.
