Our Five Favorite Volkswagen Beetles in Movies

Depending on who you ask a VW Beetle is a very endearing vehicle or one that just doesn’t matter at all. In terms of the films on this list it’s actually a very well known automobile that would likely be missed if it wasn’t there in some capacity. There have been a few iconic VW Beetles in movies and most other times it’s been just another car passing by. But it’s been there in one form or another and it’s played a role no matter how small. Sometimes that’s all it takes to notice the influence of anything.

Here are just a few instances in which the VW shows itself in film.

5. 3000 Miles to Graceland

Ever play the game slug bug? Well the object isn’t so much to hurt each other as it is to pass the time. Maybe somebody didn’t give Costner’s character that memo. The kid in this clip is tough as nails and kind of has to be just to get along. But Costner, he’s the real deal tough guy and he lets the kid know it with a good clip to the side of his head. But hey, they’re just playing a game, right?

4. Transformers

A lot of new generation fans might not realize this, or they might and not care, but Bumblebee started out as a VW when he was created. It might not have been his original form on his home planet, but when the cartoon first came out he was VW Beetle. The fact that they showed his throwback form in this film is just cool since it offers a nod in a way to the past even though he slams his door into the car only a few moments later. It’s a kind of in with the new out with the old moment.

3. What’s Up Doc?

They seem to be going continually downhill in this car chase. It started out with them running, then on a bike, and then under cover of a Chinese dragon costume, and finally in this VW.  The entire car chase is simply too much hilarity for one movie as the scene is so wonderfully over the top that you can’t help but continue to laugh and laugh as the pair continually avoids one disaster only to get into another one in the next second.

2.  Boys In The Hood

In a neighborhood were lowriders and hydraulics are the thing, Tre rides in a VW with a soft cover on it. He doesn’t try to front by making it anything other than what it is, and somehow he makes it work. But the interesting thing is that for most of the movie you only ever see him and Ricky riding around in it. It’s almost like no one else would be caught dead in the VW for fear of their reputation being blown. It’s not a bad-looking car really, but it definitely stands out.

1. Herbie Fully Loaded

The king of the VW’s, Herbie has been a mainstay in American culture for decades now. He hasn’t always had the same type of fame he did when he came out as the Lovebug, but he’s definitely a good memory. A magic car that can get up and go with the best of them is likely to be remembered by at least a few people.

The VW Beetle isn’t much to look at really, but it has a quality that still keeps it relevant somehow. It’s a classic that doesn’t ever seem to go away.
