Since Justice League is expected to see release in November of 2017, it should come as no surprise to learn that we can expect a number of new installments in the DC Extended Universe based on some of DC Comics’s most famous characters. One example is Batgirl, which will be written, directed, and produced by Josh Whedon while drawing inspiration from the New 52 comics under Gail Simone’s run. Unsurprisingly, there has been a great deal of speculation about who will be chosen to play Batgirl in the movie of the same name.
Here are some examples of the actresses who are said to want to play Batgirl as well as the actresses who are rumored to have been chosen for said role:
Alicia Silverstone
People who remember the Batman & Robin movie might remember that Alicia Silverstone was the one who played Batgirl the last time that she appeared on the movie screen. She has stated that she would be interested in playing Batgirl again, adding that she would be able to do a much better job because of all the experience that she has accumulated over the two decades since that movie. Unfortunately, the new Batgirl is supposed to be a younger character, though a cameo could be fun.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra has stated an interest in playing a superhero while mentioning Batgirl as a specific example. She has the ability to play a wide range of emotions while also possessing the presence needed to sell a character as a convincing superhero. Furthermore, she is a huge star in her native India, which could provide the DC Extended Universe with an excellent chance to seize a commanding position in one of the biggest markets on the planet.
No doubt that there are those who would object on the basis of Chopra’s ethnicity, but there are plenty of ways to reconcile such a casting with existing canon for the DC Extended Universe, which range from Jim Gordon having married a South Indian woman to Barbara Gordon being adopted, which was actually true at one point in the comic books canon when she was his niece as well as his adopted daughter.
Lindsey Morgan
At one point, there was extensive speculation about Lindsey Morgan playing Batgirl based on a statement that she had landed an important role as well as her choice to link to articles about Batgirl. Those rumors have been dispelled for the time being by Joss Whedon, but Lindsey Morgan remains a contender. So far, her biggest role has been a mechanical engineer named Raven Reyes on a post-apocalyptic drama called The 100.
Anna Kendrick
Some people have speculated about Anna Kendrick playing the role of Batgirl. In part, this is because she has sported red hair from time to time, which is one of the most recognizable physical characteristics of Barbara Gordon. However, it helps that she has extensive experience with a wide range of roles in a wide range of movies, including some rather action-oriented ones such as The Accountant in 2016.
Emma Stone
Likewise, some people have speculated about Emma Stone as well. Interestingly, she has already played a character in a superhero movie, not as the lead but rather as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-man as well as its sequel. As a result, some people have also been clamoring for her to play Spider-Gwen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has since absorbed Spiderman to an extent because of a deal between Marvel and Sony.
