The Evolution of Classic Horror Characters in Literature and Film

I would say that mighty have fallen but that wouldn’t be accurate.  Movie monsters have been changing for a good number of years now, taking on different characteristics depending on who’s telling the story and becoming something other than what they started out as. In some respects this has been an improvement, while in others it’s been something that makes horror fans cringe. A lot of folks don’t want to see their dyed-in-the-wool killers turned into anything other than the nightmarish figures they remember, and can get up in arms in a hurry if they perceive that the film makers are trying to satirize their favorite films. One thing we all need to remember though is that change happens. We might not like it, we might not agree with it, but as each new generation comes along they’re going to want something that caters to their desires and is new, fresh, and open to being explored. Even horror films have to change from time to time.

We just hope like crazy that they don’t become lame, comedic versions of themselves, or angst-ridden teenagers that give the horror genre a decidedly different look.

Anyone can quell the argument of whose a better vampire by claiming that they’re not real and so it doesn’t matter. But if you’re willing to wade into these particular waters then you might want to take stock of just what makes a good vampire. They’re tough, they’re quick, they’re insanely strong and can possibly shapeshift. They are known to be extremely cunning and seductive, and of course they subsist on human blood. The one thing that man fans, aside from lovestruck teenage girls, have argued over is that they do not normally have skin that glows like diamonds, nor can they survive in direct sunlight.

Zombies are another monster that seem bound to change depending on which movie or show you happen to watch. Many of the films and shows thus far have shown crazed, flesh-eating monsters that are in some state of decay and will not stop until they reach their intended prey. What they don’t do is come back to life out of sheer love for another person. Sorry folks, the human anatomy doesn’t work either way honestly, but once a person’s dead that long there’s really no coming back.

Witches are a movie monster that predates a lot of them. They’ve been seen throughout history as either vile old crones or seductive enchantress’ that can muddle the minds of their victims and lure them away from the safety of their homes for their own nefarious purposes. Throughout film history there have been many witches, some charming, some flat out mean, and some fairly insane. But the one thing they all have in common is that they do have the wiles and the intelligence to get their way.

Werewolves have been seen as the puppets of other monsters at times and wild, bloodthirsty animals at others. There’s very little middle ground when it comes to werewolves. They either run wild or they become slaves, much as was seen in the Underworld franchise and as it’s been seen in other films. A civilized werewolf is a rarity that we don’t often get to see.

So some things have obviously changed, but some things haven’t.
