For some time, Kevin Smith has been planning to make a horror movie centered around the folkloric figure Krampus. However, those plans fell through when Michael Dougherty released Krampus in 2015, meaning that Smith’s horror movie would’ve been shadowed by public perception that it was an imitator. As a result, Smith has announced his plan to turn a horror movie about Krampus to a horror movie about Kilroy, though he has stated that much of the script remains more-or-less unchanged.
Who Is Krampus?
Knowing about Krampus might provide interested individuals with some insight into Smith’s horror movie. In brief, he is a folkloric figure that sprung up in Central Europe but has since spread to other countries throughout the world. Like how Santa Claus is supposed to hand out presents to children who have behaved themselves, Krampus is supposed to punish those who have misbehaved, with examples of punishments ranging from a birching to a kidnapping for subsequent eating. As a result, Krampus is a relatively simple and straightforward choice for the monster in a horror movie, particularly since he looks like a goatish demon. Killroy Was Here is an obvious reference to “Kilroy was here,” which was a phrase that often accompanied the doodle of a bald man with a bulbous nose peeking over a wall. No one knows how it came into being, but the theories have ranged from a soldier who wrote the phrase “Kilroy will be here next week” on a bulletin board when he was sick with the flu to a ship inspector who used “Kilroy was here” as a way of stating that a particular part or place had been inspected. Regardless, what is clear is that the phrase reminds us that the more that things change, the more that people stay the same. After all, Kilroy was here is the perfect example of a meme that spread before the concept had even been coined by Richard Dawkins, which shouldn’t been surprising in a world where archaeologists have uncovered plenty of evidence supporting what seems like a universal fondness for graffiti in people across a wide range of cultures as well as a wide range of time periods.
What Does This Tell Us?
In truth, not much is known about Killroy Was Here at this point in time. We know that Kilroy will blend elements of three monsters – the Golem, the Boogeyman, and the Grim Reaper – but those monsters share so little that there isn’t much information that can be extracted from said statement. However, the fact that the horror movie used to be centered around Krampus means that we can expect Kilroy to be a monster that focuses on punishing those who have broken some sort of rule. Something that Smith has stated makes it easier for viewers to have fun as they watch a horror movie monster attack people instead of feeling bad when innocents are hurt in the process.
