It’s a bright new day in Westworld, at least when it comes to the pay scale. Evan Rachel Wood has been informed that as of season three she’s going to be getting paid just as much as her male counterparts, namely Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. That’s a big win right there for women when it comes to getting equal pay on a production, especially since the issue has been that for all the work they do they’re still getting paid pennies in comparison to their male counterparts. With some movies and shows it seems that the men do a lot more of the work, but when there’s a female lead and they don’t get paid nearly as much it’s a huge disparity that needs to be addressed.
In any line of work the pay needs to be equal, but the fact remains is that in many areas it’s not. Men for some reason pull down more money than women in a lot of different professions, especially those that are overpaid like actors and athletes. Granted they do a lot of work, but the idea of getting paid so much is still kind of ludicrous. But since that isn’t bound to change the act of paying them equally is of great importance since it shows that those who are essentially carrying the movie are worth just as much if not more than the big names that are brought in to make sure the production gets noticed. There’s a great deal that goes into the making of a show like Westworld, and Wood puts it just about perfect when she says:
“There’s a lot of politics, but there’s a lot of things that are now being talked about in a different way,” Wood said. “There is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes. There is a lot of trying to make things equal and trying to make things fair. I don’t know, there is a lot of stuff. But this is the first time that somebody made a point of being like, ‘Hey you’re getting this. And you deserve it.’ And that was nice.”
It probably did feel very nice to finally be told that she’ll be getting the same pay as those she works with given that she’s the face of the show. Dolores managed to come out in a big way in season 1 and should continue to evolve in season 2. By season 3 there’s no telling just what will happen or how Westworld will change. So far we know that various characters are no longer with us since they weren’t pertinent to the story, and some are still with us because while they don’t add a lot to the story they still serve a very big purpose that we haven’t seen yet. But to hear that the women, or at least the female lead, of the show will finally be getting paid what she deserves is great, as it could lead towards more instances when people get paid what they’re worth.
