All I’ve been reading about lately (other than my own reviews over and over again) is how Duck Dynasty is performing the ratings. Granted, it’s been performing better than most cable shows of its kind, but it kind of makes you wonder why. Someone would argue that its Phil Robertson’s controversial comments, others would argue that it’s lack of promotion for the season. I think it might have to do with the latest episodes.
Now while I love Duck Dynasty, and Season 5 has been good up to this point, it has not made me laugh out loud quite like it used to. I only propose this theory because I care about the show and of course want to continue to enjoy it. Last week, while I enjoyed the main plot about Si making a movie about himself, I didn’t care too much for the Willie and the kids subplot. I felt the same way about this episode, except that the subplot was the main plot.
In this episode, a big order comes in and the guys planned to do what they normally do, stay up all night and finish the order. Willie tells them he doesn’t care as long as they get it done, but then decides to join them on their “all-nighter”. This plotline was all about the CEO trying and failing to fit into the boys club, and spent most of the episode with Willie and Jase trying to chase down a beeping smoke alarm. SPOILER ALERT! They find it and Jase destroys it.
Now the episode wasn’t a total waste, because there’s always at least one plotline that can make us Duck Dynasty faithful chuckle. This week, it was Phil and Kay having two of their granddaughters over for a sleepover! First, Phil tells the girls that nail polish will rot their brain (and has a whole aside to the camera about the practical uses of fingernails). You know, this could explain a lot about women that I’ve been missing!
Later on, Phil decides to tell the girls a scary story. It wasn’t very scary, but it WAS about Si vomiting meatloaf while they were hunting. So there’s a mental image for you!
After a few more stories, (including one about a princess that “was a real looker, just like one of them Weather Channel girls) Phil falls asleep and the girls get him with the age-old “whipped cream on the hand while he’s sleeping” gag. Classic.
Of course, at the end of the episode, the plotlines collide just in time to find Willie awakened at the Duck Commander warehouse with “Groucho Marx” eyebrows drawn on his face. Another classic prank. I have to feel for Willie here though, because that was me EVERYWHERE I spent the night in high school. Even my own house!
Like always the episode ended with a prayer, and Jase gave a speech about the Robertsons having “thick skin” so they are able to take a joke. Hopefully that skin is still applicable when they read my reviews!
I love Duck Dynasty. While this wasn’t my favorite episode, I understand that shows have moments that don’t appeal to everyone. I’ll be back again next week regardless! Until then- don’t be the first to fall asleep!
