Under the Dome 1.13 “Curtains” Review: Well, At Least It’s Over

domeWell, thank God that’s over. Under the Dome finally ended its epic failure of a first season last night in epically failing fashion. “Curtains,” Under the Dome‘s season one finale, was an episode filled of nonsensical plot developments and stupid character decisions. Essentially, “Curtains” can stand as a symbol for the painfully boring and mind-numbingly idiotic experience that was watching Under the Dome these past few months. It can also serve as a testament to TV executives that writers can make an entire season of television that makes no sense, with no compelling characters or storylines, and still have that series become a ratings hit and garner a second season order.

So what actually happened on Under the Dome last night? I’m not exactly sure, to be honest. The citizens really ticked off the dome, so it covered itself in a black, cloudy smoke, blotting out of the sun and the sky. Julia (not Barbie) was crowned as “the monarch,” which had to be the lamest twist that Under the Dome has ever done; the only people that suck more than Julia in this show are Linda and Junior, so increased importance for any of them is immediately a mistake in my book. Then a vision of Norrie’s mom appeared, but it wasn’t really Norrie’s mom; it had just taken her form, and it warned them to protect the black-ish/purple egg thing that was inside the mini-dome. Finally, Julia dropped the egg in the water, just as Big Jim was yelling at Junior to pull the lever and hang Barbie in front of the entire town, and suddenly, the pink stars actually fell, followed by a blinding white light that appeared and encompassed the entirety of the dome. End of season one.

Did you get all that? Cause I’m not gonna lie, I just wrote that entire paragraph and can say that I maybe understand 2% of everything that occurred in “Curtains”; that’s how miserably incomprehensible this episode was. Furthermore, Under the Dome didn’t even end the first season on a good cliffhanger. The dome filling with that “white light,” right as Junior pulled the lever to hang Barbie, could not be any less enticing for me as a viewer. We all know that Barbie isn’t going to die; he’s the show’s hero, and Mike Vogel is way too pretty for any major series to kill him off. Then, we have the light that filled the dome, which is just one more annoying element that Under the Dome felt like it needed to add to its mythology, when it hasn’t even begun to give any form of answers at all to the questions that the series originally raised in the pilot.

In the end, Under the Dome was just bad television, and not “so bad, it’s good!” in a guilty pleasure kind of way, like how people viewed the final couple seasons of Gossip Girl or whatever is going on in Pretty Little Liars. No, instead Under the Dome has been a miserable mess of clichéd storytelling, clunky dialogue, and terrible characters over its entire thirteen episode run, and the biggest mystery that will never be solved for me is how the series became such a big hit to begin with.

What did everyone else think about the season finale of Under the Dome? How would you rate Under the Dome‘s first season as a whole?
