I was ready last week to whittle down the five couples to four. I was ready to use my dance knowledge, limited as it may be, to try to determine who best should move on to the finals in this season of Dancing With the Stars. I was not expecting what happened last night. Right off the bat, it was revealed that Tamar had left Dancing With the Stars for medical reasons. It was a really sweet moment, because even though Tamar has a serious disease, Val had been there at the hospital several days of the week with her. That’s loyalty.
However, the show isn’t about who left but about the people who are still on and competing for the Mirror Ball. First up, we had Bindi and Derek. In the end, the scores were a combination of their individual dances, their dance-off, and their trio dance. Bindi and Derek first danced the salsa, which, while some of the judges thought it needed to be more “dirty” and feature more “hip-action,” overall they thought was good. Bruno praised it by saying, “So vibrant! So vivacious!” They put the judges’ comments to use in the dance-off with Nick and Sharna. While Nick’s was more fun, Derek’s was sharper and cleaner and thus won out, gaining Bindi the three extra points. Finally, they got Mark for their Trio dance. I agree with Derek. The longer you’re in the competition, the more risks you need to be willing to take, but frankly, I thought the dance was boring. Leave it to the judges to disagree with me! Bruno commented, “Totally competing and intriguing work of genius!” Carrie Ann added, “That was like a professional contemporary dance company!” Overall, Bindi and Derek got a combined score of 60.
Next, we had Alex and Lindsay, who performed the waltz. They got a perfect score for their individual dance, which was amazing, and the only individual dance of the night to earn that. Bruno said, “You captured the sweeping majesty and movement of a gliding eagle,” while Julianne noted, “It was true dancing.” They faced off against Carlos and Witney in a dance-off with the salsa. With remarks from Carrie Ann (who also gave them her vote), “You impressed me.” Unfortunately, Alex couldn’t sway the other two judges. He did not get dance-off points. Next, he danced with Emma in the trio round, and they danced a tango. With notes from the judges like “You handled the threesome like an expert,” and, “Executed with such a power,” there was no way he wasn’t to get high scores. He got a 27 for that dance, so a 57 all around.
Thirdm we had Carlos and Witney. First, can I just say how sweet it is that, even though she’s not longer in the competition, Alexa is there in the Sky Box supporting him. For Carlos and Witney’s individual dance, Bruno was the only one who gave them a perfect score, remarking, “Right here. Right now. That was straight dancing. That was bloody good!” The other two judges were concerned with his facial expressions and his connection to Witney. In the dance-off, where the two of them went up against Alex, Alex had more fun with the style while Carlos stayed more traditional and in-sync. He got the three dance-off points. Next, he got Karina as his other professional in the trio dance, and while not one person had danced the Charleston before, they made it look good! Julianne said, “You completely took over that dance,” while Bruno said, “You stole the show from the girls!” He got a 29. Carlos and Witney got a 60 as well for the night.
Finally, Nick and Sharna danced the tango, and I didn’t think it was that bad. All of the judges pointed out the shoddy footwork in the beginning, but by the end of the night, Nick picked himself back up again. He got a 24 for this dance. Bruno even said, although he may grasping at straws, that, “The chemistry with Sharna… it sizzles!” I do think that’s fair to say, because she’s always helping Nick break down the walls he has in his own mind. Next, the two of them went up against Bindi and Derek in the dance-off for the samba. Carrie Ann even mentioned that while he didn’t win the dance-off, he did come back strong. Finally, Nick and Sharna got partnered with Peeta for the trio round. I’d like to mention first that this was a perfect score. Next, he did get some amazing reviews. Carrie Ann said, “This was the most solid you’ve ever been on your feet.” Julianne stated, “Tonight, you just showed do or die and you did it.” In the end, he got a 54.
Because Tamar was forced to leave the show, no one was eliminated last night on Dancing With the Stars! Yippee! No one went home!! Yes, it sucks that a clear choice for the finale went home early, but I’d like to see who makes it besides Bindi, because it would be a shock if she didn’t. It seems like all of Australia is voting for her. Here are the scores for this week:
- Derek & Bindi and Carlos & Witney- 60
- Alex & Lindsay- 57
- Nick & Sharna- 54
