When Supergirl was first announced, everyone thought it would be a perfect fit for The CW; however, the adventures of Kara Zor-El and her friends in National City instead aired its first season on CBS. While CBS executives kept insisting that a superhero show could perform well on their network, Supergirl‘s ratings told a different story, which is why it wasn’t a huge surprise when the DC Comics series moved from CBS to The CW for Season 2. And now, with that move firmly in place and Supergirl kicking off Monday nights for The CW this fall, the network’s president, Mark Pedowitz, can finally say what we were thinking all along: Supegirl should have been on The CW in the first place.
“We are sitting down with Greg Berlanti and his team next week or so,” Pedowitz said on a conference call with reporters on Thursday to discuss the new schedule. “We have a rough idea where they’re heading [with Supegirl Season 2] and, because our working relationship with Greg, we’re confident they understand what our needs are. As for the tone or tonality of the series, they did have a pretty successful series. The fact it’s now moved to The CW, where it should have been in the first place, I don’t think it will have a big impact on the tone.”
Additionally, Pedowitz also touched upon Calista Flockhart’s future role in the superhero series. To cut costs for Season 2, Supergirl is moving production from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and Flockhart’s original deal for the show ensured that she’d be able to work near her home in L.A. Will she be back for the show’s second season?
“We’re in ongoing discussions,” Pedowitz said regarding Flockhart’s status. “We’re thrilled that she wants to continue with the show and we’re happy to have her in [in whatever capacity] works out.”
In happier news, Pedowitz also teased this year’s four-show, superhero crossover between Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, calling it “our biggest one ever.”
“Just imagine what our crossover episode is going to look like come December,” he told reporters.
