So where are the flying cars? Why isn’t the LAPD housed in a building that looks like Goth crossbreed of a temple and a fortress? Where are the Replicants that are supposed to be rebelling against humanity? Well, maybe it’s a good thing that we don’t have those things since people in the current era might not know how to handle them. But Craig Elvy from ScreenRant states, the popular movie Blade Runner is no longer the future no matter that it was set up that way back in the 80s when it was made. It’s funny to think of now isn’t it? It’s also not the only movie to have done this since there are others that have promised a much different-looking future than what we currently have, which is basically like the past with just a few more technological toys hanging around. The visions that people had of the future decades ago is just hilarious now since very little of what was predicted has come to pass.
Remember when Escape from New York turned the Big Apple into a prison city that many people had tried to escape? Or how about Back to the Future II when there were flying cars everywhere and hoverboards? The ability of storytellers to concoct a fabricated view of the future is something that a lot of people find amazing as well as mesmerizing since it’s often used to tell a great story and show just what humanity might be capable of if their reach happened to be as great as their imagination. As of this month though the idea that Blade Runner will no longer be suitable as a future story seems to be the idea. Granted it will still be a futuristic story, and Blade Runner 2049 will still stand, but this movie will still fail to register as ‘the future’ in a lot of minds that are a little more susceptible to articles such as this. You can think what you’d like, that’s the beauty of free will after all, but this movie will always be a futuristic movie since that’s how it was designed and that’s how it was created. But it is accurate to say that we’ve passed the timeline in which this movie was created and as a result some people have looked at it and found the phenomenon, however mundane, to be something worth noting. Fair enough, the initial date in which it was set has passed and we haven’t seen much of anything that the movie seemed to promise us, but the funny thing about it is that like any other movie, it’s entertainment and a look into a world of pure science fiction. Rebecca Pahle of Mental Floss has a few things to say about the subject as well.
Honestly the most recent addition to this story wasn’t as great as it was made out to be from the viewpoint of a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to diminish the original. The truth is that the first movie didn’t really impress a lot of people from the start, it had to become a cult classic after it was released on VHS to really gain any ground, and as the years have gone by it’s finally been seen as a masterpiece and something that people can no longer speak out against without starting a debate. Funny how that works isn’t it? I can remember watching Blade Runner for the first time and thinking it was one of the strangest movies I’d ever seen. Of course this was after I’d seen Harrison Ford in movies like Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies. Yes, I was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to Blade Runner, but it was still a rather odd movie to me since it was so insanely dark and just looked absolutely depressing considering how the use of shadows and negative elements was displayed. But once I watched it again this movie took on a new meaning and a new dimension that didn’t really elevate it but further explained just why it was something that did deserve some respect. It might not be the greatest movie in the world but quite honestly it did deserve the regard that it’s been given, to a point. Joe Anderton of DigitalSpy has a few things to say about this matter.
It’s no longer the way we’ll view the future, in fact it hasn’t been in a long time if you want the honest truth since by the time the 90s came along the future became less and less likely to include even half of the things that we’ve seen in the movies. The many movies that have come along since this time are all in agreement that in the far-flung future is bound to be something that might be technologically-advanced but at the same time is headed towards a very dark place. Some folks might think otherwise since Blade Runner is ‘no longer the future’ but honestly the movies are still in agreement that things are only getting more depressing as time goes on, just in different ways.
