Celebrating National Dog Day: Five Dog Movies You Need to Watch

It’s National Dog Day and few animals could be more deserving than mankind’s best friend. They are asked to do so much so often that it stands to reason that they deserve more than just a day, but it’s a special day to celebrate dogs and the many different purposes they have in our lives. Dogs serve, comfort, and even rescue humans when taught to do so, and only ask for a bit of compassion in return. If you feed and love a dog then they’ll be your best friend for the rest of your life. Dogs are considered man’s best friend because they don’t judge, they don’t discriminate, and they’re almost always happy to see you no matter what. So be good to your pet, treat them like the part of the family they are, and by all means appreciate them.

Here are a few movies that show how dogs truly can make a difference in our lives.

5. Rocky

Butkus wasn’t much to look at but he was Rocky’s pal through and through and Balboa couldn’t really see himself without the lovable mastiff. Butkus shows up in the original Rocky but after the second one we really don’t see him at all. That’s okay, he was a great addition to the first movie as he showed a soft side to Rocky that wasn’t all that evident at times.

4. Marley & Me

Anyone that has ever had a dog in their life will know the agonizing torture of having a dog that is literally untrainable. It’s not that they’re stupid in any way, it’s that dogs, like people, are unique and have their own personality that a lot of people fail to see. Dogs can be every bit as complex as humans, but when they are it’s typical that they’re a little more apt to cause trouble.

3. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

This one is a tear-jerker for certain. A lot of us probably watched this movie when we were kids and were completely enthralled by the voice-overs for the animals as well as the training that the dogs and cat had to go through to be able to do all the things they did. We didn’t think about special effects and stuff like as kids, we just enjoyed the fact that two dogs and a cat were so dedicated to their families that they crossed a vast distance to reunite with them.

2. A Dog’s Purpose

If reincarnation works for humans then why not dogs? This is the story of one dog that is brought back to life throughout generations into different bodies and even as a different gender, but always for a purpose. The purpose of any dog is to enrich the lives of their family in one of many ways. Dogs are like the balm that the soul needs at times and can be your best friend through anything.

1. Balto

Loosely based upon a true story, Balto is the amazing re-telling of a mixed breed that heroically braved the elements to bring a shipment of badly needed medicine to a small town that was far removed from any and all other cities. Through great adversity Balto struggles to save the children of the small town, overcoming all hardships to save those he cares for.

Remember to appreciate your furry family members, always.
