I Cannot Sit By And Watch an Overboard Remake Get Made

I tried to stay silent yesterday when I read about an Overboard reboot but I cannot stand by and watch this happen.  It’s like every shred of my youth is getting ripped out of me with these remakes.  First Dirty Dancing with Abigal Breslin on network TV and now Overboard with Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez?  Who the hell is Eugenio Derbez?  And every single time I see Anna Faris I think of three things:  Her Cameron Diaz based character in Lost in Translation, all of the Scary movies, and her in the movie Waiting.  That’s it.  That’s all.  Picturing her as some rich debutante turned housekeeper by a carpenter played by none other than Eugenio Derbez is simply something I cannot, and will not wrap my head around.

Overboard is a complete classic.  It falls into the “I’ll watch it every single time it’s on TBS” category.  The chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in that movie is phenomenal. Despite how terrible a job the four boys do of acting in that film, it’s just a great flick.   The music is great.  Dean’s best friend Billy Pratt is incredible in that movie.  Grant is about as pompous as any rich man ever played in a movie.  Even the psychiatrist who plays the piano (who was also in the movie Big as that recruiter for Macmillan toys) is hilarious.  Dr. Carmen I believe?  There’s almost nothing to dislike about this film, except for the fact that it’s being remade.

I’m pretty sure Garry Marshall is turning over in his grave right now.   Even Goldie Hawn gave the film her blessing in 2012 when Jennifer Lopez was attached to the lead role.  Hawn talked about the idea in 2012, telling Stylist, “There are so many remakes today I often wonder why they’re not thinking of new ideas. One thing I would say is that the film is relatively iconic; they still show it on TV. I mean, I can’t believe how often they show that movie! So, I guess when they remake it they should have a different slant and different people. That’s the challenge. Good luck to them.”

Exactly, good luck to them.  No way Goldie Hawn is down for this.  Despite the fact that I would strongly oppose a sequel that would be way more acceptable than a reboot.  I have nothing against Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez for taking the job and getting work but man, this just rubs me the wrong way.

I love this movie
