U2 has been one of the most popular bands around for decades now, and have enjoyed a type of success that many bands have never really achieved. While their front man, Bono, has often times been showcased far more than the band, the group has been on the minds and lips of many fan since their beginning in the late 1970’s. While they weren’t as popular worldwide in the beginning as they became in 1980’s, their sound was impressive enough that they were picked up by Island Records and cultivated into a genuine rock sensation. Not bad for a group of teens from Dublin
5. Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me – Batman Forever
The movie might have been a flop but the song is remembered as edgy, thrilling, and an edge of your seat piece that entertained even the most jaded music lover. The main concern is that this track did and didn’t seem to fit with the whole idea of Batman, as the imagery is intense enough to suggest that it was in fact a good match, but the popularity of the song managed to endure for longer than the film.
4. The Sweetest Thing – Mr. Deeds
U2 has been used in countless films as mere background music, but in Mr. Deeds it is used to set a very innocent and touching tone that seems to infect the entire movie. Some might almost say that the film was simply too sweet and innocent to be believable, but thankfully U2’s contribution was quite small and little more than it’s been in several other films. Sometimes the best way to contribute is to just be a part of the movie for one of its best scenes and then quietly disappear.
3. Pride(In The Name of Love) – In The Name of The Father
Not often do you see a powerful and emotional story that is put forth by Hollywood with such an intense impact upon society. U2 definitely deserves a great deal of credit as their track, Pride, sets the tone for this film in a way that is hard to ignore. While it has been used in many other films and even TV shows since then, it is still a powerful tune that makes most people lift their heads high.
2. Hands That Built America – Gangs of New York
Despite the powerful imagery of the lyrics this song almost has the feeling of an afterthought. It might be that this was the intent, but until the track rolls one would have no idea that U2 had anything to do with the film. With that said the track is gripping and tells a definite story of what America was like far back in the day, allowing a small glimpse into a world that fewer and fewer in this day and age can remember.
1. Where The Streets Have No Name – Fearless
Imagine you survive a horrible calamity that no one has any right to live through. Would you cower in fear of the next moment, or would you embrace each and every breath from that day forward? The lyrics and the feel of this song simply cry out freedom from everything holding a person back, and the film portrays that beautifully.
As one of the most popular bands in history that are still remembered and cherished, U2 have become a worldwide mainstay in the music industry. Their tracks are so ingrained into the minds of their listeners that there is little chance, if any, that their legend will ever be forgotten.
