Sofia Boutella is kind of a quandary since she has a lot of talent and seems as though she should be able to take on a host of roles that will easily elevate her in the eyes of many. But one glaring role that’s been standing out since she was seen in The Mummy has some people still wondering if she’s just being misused in a way or if she still has a few flaws to iron out. Her talent is easily noticed but at the same time there are moments when it seems as though she’s kept to the side even when she’s taking the lead and is overshadowed by bigger, more established actors. That she’s able to carry a story is only slightly disputable but that she’s talented goes without saying. She’s participated in a very diverse array of movies at this point and it would seem that she can do quite a bit, but until she has a truly outstanding role that captures an entire audience it’ll be easier to just say she’s a good rather than great.
Here are her five best movies.
5. Fahrenheit 51
Darren Franich of Entertainment Weekly definitely puts the screws to this movie since it would seem that some books need to stay books unless there’s no way in hell that the movie can screw up. What’s ironic is that a lot of people have had an issue with this story in the past since anything that talks about burning books is usually attributed to a very negative aspect of humanity that doesn’t go in for learning or the active imagination that is so prevalent in the species. But for some reason the movie didn’t seem to convey as much of the story as people wanted, though it did manage to get the point across fairly well for all the criticism it received.
4. Climax
Xan Brooks from The Guardian and many others shouldn’t really be surprised that a few people walked out of this movie. It’s a serious drug trip that gets exceedingly violent and even more than a little disturbing as time goes on but also details the lengths to which human nature can go in a big hurry. When someone spikes a bowl of sangria that nearly everyone within the cast has drank from with LSD the gathering gets wilder and wilder as people begin to lose their minds, their inhibitions, and eventually their lives as they continue to sink further and further into their different psychoses as the acid continues to take effect.
3. Atomic Blonde
If anyone states that there are no effective female spy movies in show business then they need to be directed to this one since not only does it kick up the action a few notches but it’s decidedly modern as Charlize Theron and Sofia’s characters enter into a romantic relationship at one point. The spy genre is definitely changing as time goes on and there’s no doubt it’s going to keep changing as the world changes around it. This movie is just one of many that’s likely to reach the public in a way that might initially be ignored as this movie was after a while, but will come to be the norm eventually.
2. Star Trek: Beyond
Even if you’re a dedicated Star Trek fan, it seems obvious that Allie Funk of Bustle is correct in assuming that one battle within the movie will make anyone bust up laughing as it’s shown. While Sofia’s character doesn’t take much action other than to turn on the music in this battle it’s still insanely funny and kind of cool since after all the advanced technology and other methods don’t work, the crew of the Enterprise fights back using ‘classical’ music that blares into life and shreds the enemy fighters as they’re controlled by a hive mind and what affects one will likely affect many. Who knew that Sabotage would eventually take on a very literal meaning in a movie?
1. Kingsman: The Secret Service
It’s highly amusing to think that anyone would bother saying that women are underrepresented in movies in a big way in this day and age since honestly Sofia plays one of the best villains ever in this film. Granted she’s given a death scene that doesn’t seem quite good enough since a small scratch that invites a deadly poison into her system is kind of a weak way for such a great villain to go out, but she was awesome all the same for the time she was was utilized. This movie proves that she can play the villain in a very convincing and devious manner that allows her to be seen as feminine and at the same time insanely dangerous. Honestly, women are becoming more and more prominent in movies, but at times it doesn’t seem to be enough.
She’s been good so far, there’s no doubt that she’ll be great eventually.
