Octavia Spencer is that type of actress that can play a woman you really like with attitude, or a character you really don’t like, with the same attitude. Typically people tend to like her more than not in the movies since even if she’s being kind of a pain in the rear she still has a good reason for doing so. In fact there are only a few movies in which she doesn’t really have a decent part since she plays the nosy individual that has all attitude but little call for it. In a lot of movies she’s been her characters are the most emotionally aggressive of many of those around her and it’s the kind of character that you can’t help but love since she tells it like it is and doesn’t let anyone get away with any foolishness. In a big way she’s like the on screen mom for a lot of characters since she tends to take charge and give strength to a lot of her costars.
Here are her five best movies.
5. Black or White
What’s best for a child isn’t always what’s seen to be the best. There’s a good deal of issue with race in this movie since Eloise is a young black girl being raised by her white grandfather Elliott, who unfortunately has lost his daughter, Eloise’s mother, and his own wife and is raising Eloise on his own. Her father’s mother, Roweena, seems to think that she needs to be raised by her father, who is a drug addict, to which Elliott objects, despite the fact that he’s a known binge-drinker. To make matters worse Roweena and Elliot continually fight when it comes to who has custody of their granddaughter, which isn’t good for Eloise.
4. Hidden Figures
Being a woman in history has never been easy but being a colored woman in history has been even harder at times since men tended to run the world and didn’t think women knew what it took to help out or do anything other than assist at times. But when women started making it known that they were able to excel at math and higher learning it was a huge boon to many different areas of life since it meant that not only were they able to help out, but it was a different perspective that could allow the projects that they were working on to be seen in a new light that could help find flaws and possibly advance their fields in ways that had never been realized.
3. Gifted
It’s hard enough raising a child that’s not your own when you don’t have any experience and everyone that knows how smart she is comes knocking down the door to try and maximize her potential. But in this kind of case it’s always nice to have a neighbor that cares for both of you and has your back no matter what. Roberta is that type of neighbor that will straighten a person out when she feels the need and do it in the kindest way possible, while also standing in front of anyone that might seem like they’re about to do something rash and harm her friends in any way. That’s the best kind of neighbor to have.
2. Ma
Some people just don’t know how to let go of the past, especially when the past contains the kind of trauma that made them grow up in a manner that was anything but balanced. Sue Anne is the type of person that holds a grudge and while you can’t really blame her since what she was put through in school was so humiliating you also can’t let her off the hook since she has this nasty habit of gaining the trust of the kids of those that shamed her so badly in the past. That’s kind of a dirty way to get back at someone, even if they did manage to humiliate you so badly. It’s also the sign of a mind that’s absolutely insane and thinks nothing about crossing that line.
1. The Help
Minnie is perhaps one of the funniest and most memorable characters in this entire movie since she’s tough as nails at times and yet entirely vulnerable at others, such as when she’s being beaten by her husband in one unfortunate scene. But the revenge she gets on Hilly is nothing short of priceless since it’s decidedly gross and would get a person locked up today, but it’s so poetic in its delivery that the laughter that bubbles up as a result is nothing short of earned and easy to join in since the manner in which some of the maids in this movie are treated is more than shameless, it’s criminal in a way that makes a person wonder how it could have ever happened.
She’s the kind of person you’d definitely want to be friends with.
