At the moment, all but one of the 10 highest-grossing movies were made in this millennium. The sole exception is 1997’s Titanic, which has earned more than $2.1 billion at the box office. This is enough to have maintained it as the second highest-grossing movie, following 2009’s Avatar but preceding 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2015’s Jurassic World, and 2012’s The Avengers.
There are a number of potential explanations for why movies seem to be earning more and more. For example, there is the matter of inflation, which once incorporated into the calculations, reveals that Gone with the Wind should lead the list before being followed by Avatar, Star Wars, Titanic, and The Sound of Music. However, it should be noted that the inter-connected nature of the modern world means that there are now more potential movie-goers as well, as shown by a number of recent movies that flopped in the North American market but still managed to bring in millions and millions of dollars in foreign markets throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Regardless, it is clear that the movies at the top of the list of the highest-grossing movies won’t be there forever. Sooner or later, a new movie will be so appealing to such a wide swathe of potential movie-goers that it will be propelled to the top of the list, with all signs suggesting sooner rather than later considering that Avengers: Infinity War is expected to be released on May 4 of 2018.
Will Avengers: Infinity War Become the Next Highest-Grossing Movie?
In recent times, Avengers: Infinity War has been brought up because of a statement from Spider-man actor Tom Holland who speculates that it will be the biggest movie of all time. This statement is not based on much, seeing as how said individual hasn’t even read the entire script, but it was more than capable of stirring up the fans as it was meant to do. Still, considering what we know about Avengers: Infinity War, Holland’s statement might well prove to be the truth in time.
After all, Avengers: Infinity War will bring together not just all of the Avengers but also all of the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as other superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a result, it is not unreasonable to speculate that it will bring in significant percentage of the fan-bases for all of those characters, thus making up a much bigger potential fan-base than otherwise possible.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Avengers: Infinity War will be the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thus providing interested individuals with even more reason to see it as soon as possible. Finally, the recent success of Wonder Woman serves as a reminder that superhero fatigue is not a phenomenon that has set in at this point in time, meaning that there is no need to be concerned from that quarter as well. Summed up, Avengers: Infinity War has a real chance of becoming the highest-grossing movie, though it remains to be seen whether it will actually manage to live up to that promise.
Of course, even if Avengers: Infinity War reaches the top position, there is no real reason to believe that it will hang onto it forever. After all, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not going to rest on its laurels. Furthermore, it is doubtful that other studios wouldn’t be interested in the same honor, which is ultimately, as it should be.
