It might be hard to figure out how or why, but according to Allie Gemmil of ScreenRant two of the characters that we believed to be dead in the first Avatar movie will be making their return somehow for the sequel that’s said to be hitting theaters in 2020. Thus far the title of the sequel is thought to be Avatar: The Way of Water, alluding to the Metkayina clan who live near the cliffs and were shown during the gathering of the Na’vi people during the first movie. The overall theme of the movie isn’t known as of yet but considering the location that it’s taking place in one can only assume that the same force that keeps the Na’vi people connected to their world, Eywa, will be present within the oceans as well. But bringing Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang back into the mix seems kind of odd since both characters were seen to perish in the first movie.
For those trying to wrack their brains in an attempt to think of a way that Dr. Weaver could come back, reading what Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend has to say might be kind of enlightening and make a lot more sense. It sounds as though Sigourney will indeed be coming back, but the good doctor will still remain deceased as Weaver will be coming back as a different character. While we don’t know at this point just who she’ll be or if she’ll be as friendly to the Na’vi as her first character, it’s safe to assume that she’ll still be a big part of the star power that’s need to propel this movie forward. After all in the first movie was a joy to see her since despite the fact that she hasn’t done a whole lot of great things throughout the most recent years she’s still one of the most respected actresses in show business and brings a great deal of class and professionalism to just about any movie she’s in.
Interestingly enough though it would sound, according to Adam Chitwood of Collider, as though Stephen Lang will be taking up the same role that he made work in the original movie. How this is possible still isn’t being fully explained since it might ruin the whole idea of it, but it does sound as though he’s going to be a persistent villain throughout the sequels and will keep coming back like some deranged, homicidal Energizer bunny. There might be a lot of theories as to how this could be since on Pandora things and people do stay dead occasionally, but there seems to be such a huge connection between one living thing and another that there might be a theory as to how he could survive and how he could take an arrow the size of a spear to the chest and still walk away. But then again since the movie is being thrust forward in time as it sounds to the point that Jake and Neytiri have children, there might be a lot of time in between that could explain just how Quaritch could make a return and Weaver’s new character will arrive on Pandora or make herself known. Right now all that IS known is that Lang and Weaver will be returning and that Lang will be taking up his old role.
This almost seems like a mistake to be honest as Quaritch’s return might be good for one movie, but after a while it could play out as him being a nemesis that Jake simply can’t get rid of, meaning after the second movie it could get tiring and possibly overplayed unless Cameron has a trick or three up his sleeves that can appease the fan base and make them believing that Lang is absolutely necessary as the villain and that no one could possibly come along that might top Quaritch. It remains to be seen if this is going to be a good idea but since Lang’s character was one of the nastiest and most hated individuals in the movie it does seem worth it to see how his return in the sequel might play out. In fact if anyone’s being honest the only two apart from Jake that really stuck out in the movie were Weaver and Lang since they played such concrete roles that didn’t really change. This isn’t to say that the rest of the cast didn’t do their job perfectly and with great enthusiasm, but upon breaking it down and really looking at the characters you can see how Lang and Weaver’s characters both stood as the opposing sides in a fight that swayed the ideals of a few characters, Jake included.
Keeping these two actors almost seems to indicate that Cameron wants that same balance back for the sequels since quite honestly Weaver and Lang were like day and night when it came to their characters.
