So, initial impression, aside from this being awesome, is that it looks like some weird sort of sacrificial altar at which the eager dragon is looking for its tribute. That imagery might seem a bit disturbing but it’s the first thing that popped to mind. This statue, carved entirely by a chainsaw, is without a doubt one of the coolest pieces ever seen. Just the fact that the guy didn’t use chisels or anything else, just a chainsaw, is an easy 10 for 10. I would say 11 but I’d like to keep the artist a little bit humble. Let’s just say that the impressive nature of this piece is such that giving it top marks is the way I say, WOW.
With the reddish cast to its head and trunk the dragon almost looks like some vengeful creature bent on destroying whatever it can as it crests the rise in front of it. The wings flaring to either side is a great touch.
Here’s a look at it before it was dusted off and stained and then after. It takes on an almost stony look after the stain is applied. Or is that stain? It almost looks as though it might have been burned and etched in places, so perhaps my first assessment was wrong. No matter how it was done however it is a stunning visage of a mighty dragon ready to do, something, we don’t know what.
The length of time it must have taken to create this thing is hard to imagine, but it had to have taken a substantial amount of time and a great deal of patience. One has to wonder if the artist has scraped a few pieces on the way to making this one or if they’ve been at it long enough that they know exactly what they’re doing and know what it takes to go from start to finish.
From this angle it almost looks like the tail has already taken a notch out of the bench and is coiling to take another. It’s from this angle that you can really see as the tail goes under the bench and adds some more support as well as to the aesthetic of the entire piece. I kind of wonder by looking at the wing if it’s strong enough to offer any back support or if it’s purely ornamental. It would make for a cool picture to see someone propped up against the wing, perhaps posing as though they’re about to be taken by the dragon.
This cat certainly has no problem with the piece, but for cats most anything can be a perch so long as it doesn’t startle them. From this angle though it really looks like that dragon is about to pounce on the small, hairy morsel. When you look at the piece from this angle though you can really be a sense of its overall stability and possible durability.
Having this kind of talent,m with a chainsaw no less, would nothing short of awesome.
