America’s Got Talent: New Season. New Talent. New Host. Same Judges.

America's Got Talent

It’s the summer season once again. You know what that means. It’s time for some America’s Got Talent. This season, there’s a slight change. We have a new host. Her name is Tyra Banks.

When Nick Cannon announced his sudden departure from the show, I couldn’t believe it. I thought that it had to be a publicity stunt. Then it turns out that it’s not a stunt and he’s leaving the show for real; I could barely contain my shock. Though after watching Tyra do her thing, I have a feeling that season twelve is going to be just as great.

The talent level this year is off to a good start. However, there were some acts in this season premiere that made me think: why are they even here? Like the group of elderly ladies that played the kazoo, and the mystery escape artist that took way too long to complete his act. Simon and Mel B. were gracious enough to take their X off to put him through, but he did not get enough “yes”s in the end.

The acts that I loved the most were Darci Lynne’s ventriloquist act and fellow Vancouverite Will Tsai’s magic act. The former got a Golden Buzzer from Mel B., which is well-deserved considering that she’s only twelve and can perform like a seasoned professional. Tsai’s magic act boggled my mind as I could not figure out how he did it. I look forward to seeing more close-up magic from him.

I also found Singing Trump’s act to be quite good. It’s not every day that I compliment the current President of the United States, but this impersonator did a great job. He performed two of Bruno Mars’s songs, 24K Magic and Uptown Funk. I wonder what else he has up his sleeve for the next round of the competition. Puddles the clown did an excellent job as well with his rendition of Sia’s Chandelier.

The act that made me gasp was Demian’s escape act. When the sand buried him in the glass case, I thought for sure that he was dead. I breathed a sigh of immense relief when a stagehand revealed himself to be Demian. Very sneaky sir. Very, very sneaky.

Side Notes:

Preacher Lawson’s comedy act was funny, but it wasn’t laugh out loud funny for me. If he can up his game in the next round, then he’s got a chance at making it to the live shows.

The brother/sister salsa duo was nothing short of amazing. I could sort of dance, but not as well as those two. Merrick Hanna’s performance is fantastic as well. If possible, they could go on one of those dance competition shows like World of Dance or something.
