A new Ed Sheeran portrait has been the subject of internet banter over the last 24 hours or so. The National Portrait Gallery recently unveiled a fancy portrait of him, painted by Belfast-based artist Colin Davidson. According to a statement from the gallery, the 4-foot-square oil painting is the result of an encounter between the artist and Ed Sheeran’s dad, John, who’s an art historian and curator.
“He [Davidson] has shown the private me, which few people ever see. I like the way he’s contrasted the reflective moment with such energetic and expressive brushwork. You wouldn’t think they’d go together, but they do,” Sheeran said in a statement. “He’s captured me thinking and feeling, which is extraordinary when you think he’s working with just some oils on a piece of linen,” Sheeran continued.
When Sheeran shared the news on Twitter fans immediately likened the new portrait to a very famous portrait of a very famous painter: Van Gogh. I must say that I completely concur with this assessment. While Sheeran may not be a dead ringer for this portrait, he definitely looks like he can be a descendant. Check out the two photos below:
