This is a good week to be a comic book show. Agents of SHIELD has been back for a few weeks, but this was the first week in which the LMD story started to really sizzle. Seeds of betrayal and doubt begin to seep into an otherwise action packed story making for a layered, well-rounded story. Well, so far so good anyway.
This week on Agents of SHIELD: The legitimacy of SHIELD is called into question at a hearing involving Director Mace and Daisy, with Senator Nadeer leading the charge. During the hearing, Coulson and Yo-Yo break into the senator’s office to bug it, but they are caught. Fitz and Simmons deal with the fallout of Fitz reactivating Aida’s head. May tries desperately to escape Radcliffe’s program. A second LMD is put in play.
What’s great about this episode of SHIELD is that everything (all of the different plot threads and characters) established in the early part of the season have rolled into one main plot. It really takes #itsallconnected to the next level. All threads affect the others, and they’re all intertwined with delicious dramatic irony and exciting character team ups. Like Coulson and Yo-Yo, for instance.
At its core, this was just a well told story. Everything clicked. The Fitz and Simmons drama was natural and didn’t feel forced at all. Daisy was fierce in front of the committee. Radcliffe gave me serious doubts about who the other LMD was. So, I was moved by the drama because it all felt real, and it kept my heart pounding as I worried that each of my favorite characters had gone into LMD mode. Luckily, Mack was being shady for a different reason and he was not the LMD.
I can always appreciate, too, when a show catches me off guard and I’m unable to predict the story. Radcliffe (spoilers) making HIMSELF into an LMD, and simultaneously being in cahoots with Senator Nadeer were both twists that I did not see coming. Those, along with the ongoing story about legitimizing SHIELD have really pushed the show back to the “spy show” roots, which is what I believe that Agents of SHIELD was always meant to be. The Inhumans got it a little off the rails in that department, but it got Daisy powers and I’m OK with that.
Here are a few other thoughts:
- Anyone hedging their bets on LMD May finding a loophole to tell Coulson what’s been going on? I’m thinking she’ll figure it out.
- Serious question: Now that Coulson has been arrested in front of a major Senate hearing, is it safe to assume that an Avenger or two may have found out he’s alive? Because I’d love to get him back in the films for a minute or two.
- It takes all of my strength not to write every review about how much I love FitzSimmons as a couple.
- Also, Daisy’s sass level was *insert multiple fire emojis here
This was an excellent installment, and I’m hoping that things will continue to improve as this strong story moves forward.
