Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Episode 12 Review: ”The Inside Man”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 0312This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was another intense one as well as intimidating as we see more of the Hive-possessing Ward in some of the show’s darkest scenes yet.

Even though he has been one of SHIELD’s on-and-off again semi-antagonist, I always love whenever Adrian Pasdar guest stars as Glenn Talbot on the show. Although I will admit that I’m always terrified that whenever he does guest, that it’s always going to end up as his last episode because of the danger that these characters goes up against every week. The idea of seeing Talbot and Coulson having to teaming together ended up being more than just fun, but also shocking. With a title like “The Inside Man”, I should have realized that it would have been Talbot.I was so sold on the speculation that Crusher Creel a.k.a. Absorbing Man was going to somehow play that role, which he did, but not the way I expected.

I’m really hoping that this can be the beginning for that character to be on the show a little bit more. While his son, Stonewall, in the Secret Warrior comics was part of the group, I would love for Crusher to serve that role instead since this version clearly doesn’t have a kid. I liked that he was now working for Talbot so at least we know there is some potential for the former villain to go on a more heroic path. I was thrilled that in the end, Talbot hadn’t turned sides completely, that he only did it because Gideon had taken his son. In the end, because Coulson managed to get his kid back, the two former rivals finally buried the axes and became stable allies. If there is one thing that I admire about the show the most, is the way they deal with plot twists.

The Hive-Possessing Ward continues to intrigue me while also scaring the life out of me because of how unpredictable he is. I never know whether this dude is about to go ballistic or if he is observing when he has that dead look in his eyes. I can’t believe that Gideon has such an easy time being around this person, unless he knows that he can control Hive in ways that we just haven’t seen yet. The final scene after the credits where we see Hive after he has “eaten” those five victims and is covered in what looked like honey was 100% the creepiest scene of the whole season. As a comic book fan, I just desperately want to research Hive in the Marvel Universe, but at the same time, I try to avoid it because I want to be surprised as much as I can be through the show. While they are taking their sweet time on developing this mystery about Hive, I’m 100% in for the ride.

Overall, this was another strong episode that continued to flesh out Hive and also giving us the return of two personal favorites of mine. Even though we still have no idea what the plot of their spin-off is about, where Bobbi and Hunter ended up at in the end of this episode is a signal that those two are about to go through something big by taking this huge risk which could lead to their story in Marvel’s Most Wanted.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesday nights, 8/7c on ABC.
