Pirates of the Caribbean has been a long-standing franchise since its first appearance as a grand theme park ride at Disney theme parks. However, from that original theme park ride of swashbuckling pirates and treasure came a series of five films that followed the same premise but also highlighted the mythical properties told within the theme park ride’s animation and overall story. Although hesitant to adapt the ride directly into a movie, it worked well with the more recent Jungle Cruise film adaptation, which was almost an exact replica of the ride, its stories, its mechanics, and more. As the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise took off, with back-to-back sequels and then a standalone sequel, the fifth film followed the same trend and was more of a standalone adventure for Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow and crew. Below, we’ve detailed the fifth and last Pirates of the Caribbean movie released in 2017, as well as dive into the cast, the supernatural elements within the film, how it compared to the rest, and more.
Pirates of the Caribbean
As stated above, Pirates of the Caribbean started as a theme park ride at Disney parks, but the ride inspired the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, released in 2003, which itself inspired four sequels. The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie didn’t pull too much inspiration from the theme park ride outside of inspiration for an original film. Not many elements were linked between the ride and the movie once it was released. Still, after the first film’s release, the writers of the future Pirates of the Caribbean movies started to include references to previous films and the ride over time. However, without the inspiration of the ride and cursed treasure, the plot of the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie may have been entirely different as it may not have inspired such rapid-fire sequels in its early years.
Previous Pirates Movies Detailed
While the earliest Pirates of the Caribbean movies attracted more vital fans than later entries in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise would have, the later films incorporated more accurate world history to align its events with, such as the East India Trading Company’s appearance in the back-to-back sequels, the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies included the same general cast, with a few characters coming and going in between. Still, the original trilogy heavily featured Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa, Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner, and others. However, following the third film, the general cast of the film shrank to mostly Jack Sparrow and his piracy squalls with Barbossa and some old minor characters mixed with less than a handful of new characters per movie for the fourth and fifth Pirates movies. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which was based on the Tim Powers book of the same name, added the famed pirate Blackbeard and his daughter and ex-lover of Jack Sparrow, Angelica. Throughout the film, Jack is forced to help Blackbeard and Angelica find the Fountain of Youth while trailed by Barbossa and a Spanish fleet. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean was initially meant to be lower budget than the previous films, but after the film was completed, it was marked as the most expensive film ever made.
Fifth Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Detailed
Following the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was yet another standalone adventure but focused less on Jack Sparrow and more on the entire cast, like with the earlier franchise installments. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean was also released in 2017, which marked a six-year gap between it and the previous film, on top of the four years between the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. The plot of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean may have been the most supernaturally linked and the most similar in theory to the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. As the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy followed various characters, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean did that as well with the addition of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann’s son Henry and Barbossa’s long-lost daughter. As for Jack Sparrow, his compass attracted the attention of the most supernatural cursed crew across the seas, Captain Salazar, the undead captain of the Silent Mary. Upon trading the magical compass that had guided him across the entirety of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Jack Sparrow released the undead entity that was Salazar and allowed the undead to sail the seas more freely than ever in search of Jack Sparrow. Although the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean has still been shuffled between a sequel and a reboot, an original writer has joined the sixth pirates of the Caribbean installment.
