When Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp met, sparks flew. At least, sparks flew as far as Depp was concerned. But, when it comes to Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, he sees her from across the room. He noticed her back in her low-cut dress, and he was hooked. But, by the time she turned and he saw her face, he was gone. It was 1998, and the couple had been inseparable for nearly 14 years. They welcomed two children together in the 14 years they were together. Lily-Rose and Jack. Their kids are close to Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, and they fight to keep their kids out of the spotlight as often as possible. But, there is one thing that people always ask. Why didn’t Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp get married?
Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp’s Priorities
Fourteen years is a long time to spend with a person. You love them with excitement and passion that grows into respect and commitment. The excitement and the passion are still there, but it also blossoms into a family. These two were family. They shared the same core values when it came to raising their kids. Keeping Lily-Rose and Jack out of the press was always their priority. Being good parents who love their kids is always their priority. Protecting their kids is a priority. Being there, loving them, and telling them they love them, is a priority. They are nothing if not excellent parents with tremendous respect for one another.
But, They Never Married
Many people are confused. If they loved one another so much, why not get married? They have two kids together, and they build a life together. Why not get married? Perhaps, for this couple, the idea of being together and keeping their relationship going longer than their 14 years would have been more straightforward for them to make if they were married. It seems that some people take things a lot more seriously if they are married than not, and many of their fans wonder if this is why things did not work out. Without that piece of paper and that binding contract, perhaps they did not feel the urge to fight so hard. The simple truth is that we may never know. We don’t know why they ended their relationship other than a casual remark made years later by Paradis stating she was not happy. Perhaps being in a marriage with Depp would have still left her unhappy.

Why Didn’t They Marry?
When it comes down to it, Johnny Depp always gave a simple answer about why he did not marry Vanessa Paradis. He didn’t want to change her last name. “I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay, you’re married.” That is how he looked at it.
“If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not. But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name! She’s got such a good last name.” He’s always been candid about the fact that he would have married her if she asked, but there is also a slight issue with that. Perhaps she didn’t want to tell him she wanted to marry him. Perhaps Paradis is a little more traditional. Maybe she wanted the romantic proposal and the surprise, and maybe she just wanted him to ask her without telling him she wanted it. Or, perhaps Vanessa Paradis was clear with Johnny Depp from the start – she wasn’t interested in marrying him. Maybe we’ll never know.
Why Did Johnny Depp Marry Amber Heard?
The real question about marriage is less about Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp and more about Amber Heard. What made Depp marry Heard but not Paradis? Their relationship was such a mess, and the world knows all about it at this point. So why choose to wed someone so much younger, someone he didn’t know nearly as long, and someone who is not the mother of his children? It turns out that Johnny Depp was flattered by Heard. She said all the right things. She did all the right things.

“It was not until much later that I understood that she had a plan to get married to me to progress her career and benefit financially, and she knew how to bring it about. For example, at the time, she repeatedly told me how much she admired my films; however, later in our relationship, she admitted that she had never seen any of my films,” he said of his marriage to Heard. So he was deceived by a younger woman interested in him, beautiful, exciting, and doing all the right things. He sees it now, and we imagine he’s not thrilled with himself for falling for it.
