Modern-Day Golden Girls Coming to Netflix with Cyndi Lauper

There should be a lot of people out there who are familiar with Cyndi Lauper for one reason or another. After all, she has been a notable name in American entertainment for more than four decades. As a result, whether they know it or not, chances are good that interested individuals have come upon something of hers at some point in their lives. For those who are unfamiliar, Lauper was fond of self-expression from the very start. For example, she wouldn’t stick to a single hair color even when she was still a child but would instead switch from option to option. Likewise, she chose to spell her name as “Cyndi” rather than the more common “Cindy” because of a friend’s recommendation. Unfortunately, she was the victim of much bullying because of her unusual behavior, with an excellent example being how some of the other children would throw stones at her. Still, Lauper never gave up on being who she was, which is why she went on to study art before becoming a vocalist for various cover bands. Something that served as a stepping stone for her eventual career in performing her own music.

As for Lauper’s own music, she can be said to be one of the most successful musicians that can be found out there with no exaggeration whatsoever. For proof, look no further than the fact that she has managed to sell tens of millions of albums, which have been accompanied by a wide range of awards and other accolades from a wide range of sources. On top of this, Lauper’s success has enabled her to show up in other roles as well, as shown by how she has played a surprising range of characters in a surprising range of movies and TV shows.

What Is Cyndi Lauper Doing Nowadays?

Nowadays, Lauper is still making music. Moreover, there was a recent reveal that she will be involved in an upcoming Netflix show, which should come as welcome news for her fans. In short, what happened is that Jane Lynch was speaking with the press when she revealed that her next show would be a Netflix show that would serve as a modern version of The Golden Girls. This makes sense because Lynch is closing in on the age of 60 while Lauper is already in her mid-60s, thus making them very well-suited for roles in such a show. Besides them, there will apparently be two other main roles that will have to be cast as well, meaning that it is still much too soon to be speculating about the full roster. However, it is interesting to note that the evidence suggests that Lynch will be co-writing the script for the show with Carol Leifer of Seinfeld and The Ellen Show fame because Leifer stated that she was working with both Lynch and Lauper a while ago.

Why Was Golden Girls So Important Anyways?

For those who are unfamiliar, The Golden Girls was a NBC sitcom that started up in the mid 1980s and continued until the early 1990s. Over the course of its existence, it managed to win both critical and commercial success, with the result that it became one of the best-known shows of its time. In fact, it is interesting to note that the Queen Mother Elizabeth of the United Kingdom was a huge fan of the show, which is why she convinced the cast members of the show to perform a number of skits as their characters at the Royal Variety Performance in 1988.

Regardless, The Golden Girls was centered on four older women living in the same house. One of the four women was a divorcee, whose husband had left her for a much younger flight attendant after he had become rich by inventing a baked potato opener. Meanwhile, the other three women were widows whose lives were much changed by the deaths of their respective husbands, thus leading them to their circumstances on the show. On the whole, The Golden Girls was both well-acted and well-written. However, it was its willingness to tackle serious issues that made it stand out even among such exceptional shows.

For starters, The Golden Girls had a pretty feminist message even by modern standards. After all, it involved four women supporting one another through the challenges of life following marriage while still living to the fullest extent. Something that was particularly unusual because the women were older. Suffice to say that such characters make very few appearances on the screen. Never mind such characters being shown as people who enjoy sex, which was something very notable about The Golden Girls.

Besides that, The Golden Girls was willing to tackle other important issues as well. For example, it was willing to bring up the topic of same-sex marriage at a time when the idea was still on the fringes of American politics. Likewise, it was will to discuss how declining income can devastate seniors, thus increasing the chances of them winding up on the streets without a place to call home. On top of that, The Golden Girls even covered HIV/AIDS as well as the discrimination directed against people with HIV/AIDS, which was much worse in its time than it is in the present. Other examples of issues that came up on the show ranged from the topic of assisted suicide to the immigration policies of the United States.

Summed up, The Golden Girls was a remarkable show for its time and remains a remarkable show in the present time. As a result, if a show wants to become a modern version of said show, it has a lot to live up to. With that said, Lynch, Lauper, and Leifer have been very successful in the past, meaning that it seems reasonable to say that their latest project has a fighting chance of turning into a hit. Time will tell what happens to them and their project, but hopefully, it will be capable of having a similarly beneficial effect as its spiritual predecessor.
