Is a Firefly Revival Picking Up Steam Or is It All Talk?

Joey Paur of GeekTyrant does highlight something said by Summer Glau that makes a lot of sense, and that’s the idea that the fans are the ones keeping the legend of Firefly alive. The sad part is that the studio doesn’t seem to want to commit to bringing the show back. There’s plenty of talk of course but a lot of it at this point seems more like rumor than anything. The fans aren’t wrong for wanting the show to come back however since it was a show for those that like the underdogs considering that the crew weren’t the most skilled or dangerous people in the galaxy but they were an intimidating force all the same when banded together. That being said though there are a lot of shows out there that have to do with science fiction, action, some aspects of horror and thrill, that are more than ready to step into the gap that’s left behind by any show. This has been the way of it for a long time now in fact since studios have recognized for decades that keeping the public entertained is the best way to get paid.

Summer Glau even stated that she would be torn about coming back but wouldn’t be able to stay away since this show is more than a little meaningful to her and is something she would gladly return to if given the chance. At this point it seems as though Firefly has run its course however and in saying as much it might seem as though we’re giving up on the show, but in truth it’s more or less because the actors tend to have rather hectic schedules and getting them all together for another run at the series seems as though it might require a titanic effort and precise timing that isn’t always entirely possible. There’s not a lot of doubt that a few of the cast members would likely come back if they could but once again, finding the time and opportunity to do so seems kind of up in the air at the moment since most of them are rather busy.

There are unfortunately a lot of reasons why the show was cancelled since it was never really given the treatment it needed to thrive, but that didn’t stop plenty of fans from latching onto it in a way that usually takes many shows at least a season or more to accomplish. Fans were willing to fight to the bitter end for this show to remain on the air, but it simply had too many things going against it at that time to really warrant anything but a very clingy goodbye even after the movie, Serenity, that came out and produced rather lackluster numbers. For as popular as this show was while it was still around it only became more popular once it was gone as more and more people decided that it was worth the effort to try and get it back and were determined to see it return one way or another. So far though only rumors and gossip have been heard when it comes to reviving the show, and that seems to be all that’s happening now. While some people might have just gone on their merry way and found something else to enjoy fans of the show are in full-rally mode and have been for a while since the desire to see the show return seems to have taken on a life of its own.

Julia Alexander from Polygon has actually written that Nathan Fillion, the captain himself, doesn’t want the show to come back as it’s time to move on and do something else with their careers. He’s got a good point but it’s also very easy to see that a lot of fans can’t help but disagree with what he’s saying since they don’t want to admit that the show they loved so much and with such passion was just a temporary thing. There have been other various shows that have been cancelled in the past that some people decided to fight for while other fans and even the stars agreed that it was time to move on. Trying to tell a fan that their favorite show has run its course however is sometimes like talking to a wall, it’s entirely possible but it will be a one-way conversation without fail. Some fans might even cite reasons why their favorite show should be left on the air and why it would be beneficial for a studio to bring it back even with fewer cast members. But in the end it comes down to whether the show is profitable or not and whether people think that it’s worth the risk to continue something that didn’t put up record numbers in the first place. It’s a business after all.
