Matthew McConaughey Now Teaching at the University of Texas

Well alright alright, it seems that the stereotype of actors being little more than clever and popular individuals that can’t always back up their on screen smarts is eroding a little more since Matthew McConaughey has returned to his alma mater, the University of Texas, not just to say hi, but to teach the next generation of, hopefully, free-thinkers that will eventually have their chance to change the world. Bethany Guerrero of ScreenRant and a few others have picked up on this transition in a way that seems almost muted but also respectful since quite honestly McConaughey has done quite a bit in the movie industry throughout his life and has even shown up as a guest instructor at the University of Texas in the past. As of now though it looks as though he’ll be settling in and giving his students a treat that might last for a while until the newness wears off and he simply becomes Mr. McConaughey after a while.

If you had to guess what he’ll be teaching then pardon me and many others while we roll our eyes and wait for it to come to you. Apart from his education at UT it seems pretty obvious what he might teach given his life experience and where he’s spent most of his time. Some people might take offense to the sarcasm but….oh well. Once you get over that little bout you might want to check out Josie Harvey’s piece in Huffpost stating that he’ll be teaching film, something he knows quite about since throughout his career he’s been on both sides of the camera and has the experience and the know-how to tell young folks about what it takes to reach both positions and what to do before, during, and after they’ve been there and have done it. The best part is that McConaughey doesn’t seem like he’d be that aggressive of a teacher given that even when he’s not in a good mood what comes out of his mouth is more like an impassioned lecture than a tirade. It really depends on how sensitive his students are, but it would seem that a lot of people are going to be willing to suffer through whatever he can dish out simply because he’s the kind of guy that won’t get in your face like Sam Kinison in Back to School, but will instead seek to get people to understand where he’s coming from in a very smooth and composed manner.

This is of course taking from his performances and the idea that he’ll be bringing at least a part of this to his classroom since quite honestly a teacher is an actor of sorts, but one that has to inform as well as entertain their students. This is why Matthew seems like he’ll make a great teacher, since he knows how to entertain and get people in the mood to learn, and his temper doesn’t seem to flare that much when it comes to dealing with difficult people. Watch his movies if you don’t believe this and you’ll see that the guy doesn’t really get insanely mad, ever, unless he absolutely has to. Even when he has to play an insanely mad character he seems more contemplative and quiet, which in some people is a bad sign since it means they’ve taken everything inside and the resulting explosion is going to be more than anyone in their right mind wants to deal with. With McConaughey however the propensity he carries for being the kind of teacher that might get angry at a student seems very low since he’s all about chilling out, relaxing, and taking life as it comes. This has been his persona for a long time now, and it doesn’t seem as though the classroom is going to change this.

Be aware that as far as anyone knows this isn’t it a goof, a gimmick, or a trick, it’s the real deal and McConaughey is treating it that way since, obviously, he’s wanting to give back and do something that’s worthwhile, given that he’s gone so far with his acting. Whether or not he’ll go back to the movies is kind of hard to say since his passion for teaching, as mentioned by Rebekah Allen of The Dallas Morning News, seems to be great enough to keep him around for a while. If you’re still having doubts then be assured that he’s not in it for the money, since reportedly he’ll be making less than $10,000 for the fall semester, which compared to what he’s made in Hollywood is barely a drop in the bucket. He’s here to teach the students and prepare those that want to get into show business as he’s stated, and to be honest it’s easy to be even more impressed with the man because of this.
