The Five Best Rom Com Movies of the 70s

Being coy and flirty in a rom/com has been something that’s been the staple of such movies for a long time and in the 70s it wasn’t much different, but it did seem as though it was still fresh and not quite as cheesy as the 80s seemed to get at times. Still, with every passing decade there’s been some allure that has attracted people to the rom/com and it’s been seen that no matter how cheesy it gets the audience will fall in love with at least a few such a films. The fun of the movie coupled with the idea that things are bound to get kind of crazy before they get too sentimental is a big draw that manages to get a lot of people to sit for the 2 hours or less that it takes to become invested in the movie. Some folks go these movies to be entertained, others go to be swept off their feet. The wise tend to go to them without expectation and simply want a relaxing and engaging time.

Here are a few of the best romantic comedies from the 70s.

5. Foul Play

This movie was something that might have seemed kind of awkward but it was well done and featured a few very good actors when they were still in their prime and able to deliver a great performance and capitalize on what was kind of a violent movie but still one that offered a good deal of comedy. After all when you employ actors like Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn you kind of have to expect a fair amount of hilarity since they’ve both shown that they’re quite adept at making people laugh. But the overall experience was something that was quite enjoyable and even kind of thrilling most of the way through.

4. Manhattan

Let’s put it this way, Woody Allen can do comedy but it’s the kind of humor that you might have to stop and really get into before you can truly get it sometimes. There’s nothing to say against the guy since he’s a proven talent and is able to entertain people on a level that some just don’t get. In this film you might actually think that much of it is supposed to be dead serious but in truth the comedy can be so subtle that one might miss it without even realizing it until they recall just what was said. This movie might actually take people a couple of views to really get into everything that’s being said.

3. Harold and Maude

This has to be one of the oddest romantic comedies ever devised but it’s still touching since it does seem to tell a story that you’d remember long after the movie. Harold is a young man obsessed with his own death and scaring possible female companions away with gruesome images that he concocts. While this frustrates his mother he does make a companion in Maude, an old woman that is nearing the end of her life. When Maude dies however Harold stays much the same it would seem, still obsessed with his own death and the oddities of his life. But in this manner he’s still an intriguing individual, if a bit disturbed.

2. What’s Up Doc?

It’s amazing that this movie isn’t remembered by more people and shown on a regular basis now and again since it was actually one of the funnier romantic comedies made. The whole thing does kind of revolve around the wrong people taking the wrong suitcase in one giant mixup. During this the two people that meet and are at first at odds with one another keep meeting and keep finding themselves at odds even as they keep being drawn together. It’s kind of a stretch to call it slapstick it feels like but it’s darn close and it’s simply hilarious if you watch it all the way through since the gimmicks that are brought in get used in a very smart way.

1. Annie Hall

When relationships don’t work out the average person might actually just move on or try to fix it first, there’s no telling since every last person is different. But when the couple in this movie try to fix it they find out fairly quickly that it’s just not bound to work. That’s the trick with relationships, it takes a while to build them up, but if they’re not moving forward or upward then they’re not moving and that tends to cause stagnation on a level that just doesn’t work for a lot of people. There’s usually no need for hard feelings unless things come to that and in this film the two eventually realize they’ve hit that point where it’s best just to move on.

Romantic comedies are great if you get the humor, otherwise they can still be entertaining.
