At this point in Simon Cowell’s career it seems reasonable to think that he’s received as many threats to his person as he has accolades for his performance. After all he’s made a reputation out of putting people down and telling them in the most blunt manner that they’re no good at what they’re doing. In fact getting a compliment from Simon usually means that hell either just froze over for a brief period or the person performing in front of him actually did something amazing. He’s not the type that hands out positive comments gladly and he’ll easily go toe to toe with a contestant that thinks they’re ‘all that’ when in truth they couldn’t sing a single note if they had auto-tune and an entire choir backing them up. One thing Simon has never been is afraid to tell people what he thinks. That is after all what’s made him who he is.
Here are a few other things about Simon you might not have known.
10. Simon dropped out of high school at the age of 16.
There are a lot of people that might use this as an ‘aha’ moment when it comes to pointing a finger at Simon, but it would make little sense. Whether he got his GED or equivalent is kind of irrelevant since he’s made a career for himself and a lot of the education that comes from secondary schooling is basic enough that we need it, but also kind of lost when we really find what we want to do in life.
9. Apparently he’s been giving blunt opinions since he was 4.
It sounds like it started when he told his mom that her hat made her look like a poodle. One might assume that he wasn’t given a rousing ‘thank you’ for this but then again without knowing his home life it might be that it was laughed off.
8. When a contestant quit her job to go on American Idol Simon got her job back for her when she was rejected.
This kind of proves that he’s not completely heartless. He does have a penchant for telling people exactly what he thinks and it does set a lot of people against him, but at the same time he at least took the effort to help someone that banked everything on making a music career and found that it really wasn’t for them.
7. He has an allergic reaction to lambs wool.
This seems like one of those allergies that is very specific and doesn’t happen to a lot of people, but then there are a lot of things in this world that weren’t so prevalent just a few decades ago that are now reaching epidemic levels.
6. Simon’s home was broken into in 2011.
It’s hard to say if this was an overzealous fan, someone that thought that he was an easy target, or something else. One point to take away from this however is that celebrities aren’t immune to theft and/or violence in any way since they too suffer from the effect of criminal acts.
5. He was a waiter at one time in Elton John’s restaurant.
Everyone had to start somewhere. If there’s one thing that any of us can preach it’s that most of us didn’t come out of the womb destined to be a star by the time we grew up. Almost everyone had to do something in life at one point that they either didn’t like or wasn’t bound to make them famous.
4. Simon had to move back in with his parents at age 30.
This came on the heels of Simon having lost everything due to a few bad investment deals that went south on him. There are a lot of people that move back in with their parents these days, but those that need somewhere to crash while they build themselves back up are usually those that need it most and are the most appreciative for parents that will help them. The others are just lazy.
3. He’s not a big fan of clowns.
There’s been a big debate over the effect of clowns on society for a long time now and a lot of people have a severe mistrust of clowns no matter how innocent they’re supposed to seem. There’s just something about the face paint, the outfits, and the whole idea of it that doesn’t track with some folks.
2. Apparently the Queen of England thinks he’s a dreadful man.
You know that you’ve gained a reputation that’s worth noting when someone like the Queen of England has something to say about you. It’s not just everyone that she would take note of after all, and the fact that she’s said something like this indicates that Simon is a bit rough around the edges on screen.
1. He doesn’t actually consider himself a star.
Some people would very much agree simply because they don’t like him. But Simon tends to take his job seriously and doesn’t really go in for the stardom aspect.
He’s there to judge after all, not be a pretty boy for the cameras.
