Angels of Death started out as a Japanese game called Satsuriku no Tenshi, which if one wants to nitpick, means something along the lines of “Angels of Slaughter.” Regardless, considering the name, it should come as no surprise to learn that Satsuriku no Tenshi was a horror game that was created using RPG Maker. Initially, the title was released as Japanese freeware, but in time, it managed to make it way to a wide range of markets in a wide range of languages.
Story-wise, Angels of Death is centered on a 13-year-old girl named Rachel Gardner, who is often called Ray for the sake of convenience. She is someone who became traumatized when she saw a murder, which is why she is sent to a hospital for counselling for her trauma. Unfortunately, Ray wakes up in a basement floor with no memories besides her name as well as the reason that she was sent to the hospital. Even worse, she isn’t along in the building because each of its floors is occupied by someone serving as the floor master, who can kill anyone who sets foot upon their floor. Eventually, Ray makes a deal with a serial killer named Issac “Zack” Foster, agreeing to use her intelligence to help him escape the building in exchange for him killing her because she believes that her death will be her salvation.
On the whole, Satsuriku no Tenshi was well-received. For proof, look no further than the fact that it had managed to get 1 million downloads in Japan by November of 2017, which was rather remarkable for freeware released in August of 2015. Strength-wise, the game boasted a fair amount of creativity as well as an interesting story with the curious relationship between Ray and Zack at its core. However, the game was also criticized because of its brevity, its less than optimal graphics, and its rather uneven character development. Still, there can be no doubt about the fact that Satsuriku no Tenshi was a huge success, so much so that it winded up getting its own adaptations.
First, there was the manga adaptation that started up in January of 2016. Then, there was the novel adaptation that saw the release of its first volume in July of 2016. After that, there were two other manga series, with one being a prequel to the main series and the other being a comedic 4-koma series. With that said, the single best-known adaptation should be the anime that was made by J.C.Staff, which ran from July of 2018 to October of 2018.
How Was the Angels of Death Anime Structured?
Angels of Death didn’t get a traditional single season. Instead, what happened was that it got a total of 16 episodes to complete the main narrative, which is too long to be considered a single season but too short to be considered two seasons. Due to this, the first 12 episodes were broadcast from July of 2018 to September of 2018, which is the summer season for Japanese TV. Afterwards, there was a short interval between these episodes and the remaining four episodes, which were broadcast throughout the month of October.
As a result, Angels of Death is now complete at a total of 16 seasons. Those who want to catch it can find it at the usual places. For example, Crunchyroll offers it with an English sub, whereas Funimation offers it with an English dub. Due to this, interested individuals might want to check out the various options that are available to them before going to whichever one suits their particular preferences the most.
Final Thoughts
The main narrative of Angels of Death is complete. Theoretically, it isn’t impossible for there to be some kind of follow-up at some point in the future, but that seems improbable, not least because the story of Angels of Death has received a complete resolution, meaning that there is no real narrative point to such a project. Those who found Angels of Death suitable for their personal preferences might want to check out what other projects the creator Hoshikuzu KRNKRN has been working on, with an excellent example being Forest of Drizzling Rain. However, if they are having problems finding more information about said individual, they should know that Hoshikuzu KRNKRN is a pen-name for Makoto Sanada, which might help them learn more if that is their desire.
