Sharp Objects has recently wrapped its limited series run. For those who haven’t seen the finale yet, beware for spoilers and you can back go to this article once you’ve watched it. Anyways, the series ended with a shocking and, possibly, upsetting twist that might made you want a second season. Unfortunately, HBO has already confirmed that there will be no second season and it is a limited series as it is.
The series was a slow burn at the start. It is probably the most common feedback that I’ve read about the show. The story is simply as this: Camille Preaker, a journalist, went back to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to report on the series of murders that have been happening around the town. The catch here is that she has to face the challenge of confronting her personal demons. Although, it’s not a mystery show. It’s not about who is the killer. It’s about Camille’s journey. The series was considered as a slow burn because the pacing is not the usual as most programs. Despite being directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, it’s no Big Little Lies. I don’t think it’s even fair to compare them. But, as what the title suggested, the slow burn actually paid off at the end.
From episode one to six, all we see is Camille’s journey back in Wind Gap. It’s all the same. She is investigating. Her mother, Adora, is being annoying to her. She is confronting her past and personal demons. She has romantic tensions with Richard Willis. The episodes go around that. Then, on episode seven, things became more interesting and we suddenly became more invested to the mystery. We found out that the characters that we thought have nothing to do with the mystery could actually have something to do with the mystery. It turns out that Adora poisoned Marian, Camille’s half sister who died when they were young. So we are now being lead to believe that she might be the killer after all.
In the finale, we learned more interesting information about the mystery. It was confirmed that Adora indeed poisoned and killed Marian. But she’s not the killer who did the series of murders. In the final and mid-credits scene, it was shown that Amma, Camille’s younger sister, is actually the killer. That’s a shocking and upsetting twist. It turns out that the killer is someone who probably is the least one you would think of when you watched the first episode. Eliza Scanlen (the actress who played Amma) has no Wikipedia article as of the time of writing and she is going to be a future star for sure.
This is a shocking twist for those who haven’t read the novel. The people who have read this might have expected the story to end this way. I haven’t read the novel which is why the twist was shocking for me. This is also the reason why the slow burn of the series paid off. The story’s pacing was unusual and you definitely needed patience to go throughout the series but, at the end, it gave you one of the most shocking twists on television this year. That is truly a wonderful pay off.
People might want a second season because of the twist. They might wanna know why Amma did it or what will Camille do after finding out the truth. But it would be the best to stay it this way. The twist at the end was great already and most people would agree that it should be “untouchable.” I can see the audience talking about the twist for the coming weeks. I bet most people will also agree that the slow burn in the beginning gladly paid off at the end.
