Usually the question of what happened to the Bond girls in any films is one that got left up in the air in the old days. Something always happened to them to be honest, though it would seem that for quite a while now instead of coming out of almost nowhere the Bond girls of Daniel Craig’s films have already established themselves in a solid career and been called upon to serve as women that are both intelligent as well as appealing to the eye as most Bond women are. The careers of those in Spectre however were quite rock solid before they were called upon to perform these roles, and as a result it might have increased the star power of the film but also allowed egos to collide more than once.
While some might say that this does not cause the same problem with women there is still the matter of how much screentime one person gets versus another and how much each of them is paid for their part. Seeing as how the amount of exposure they receive, their current salary, and many other factors go into this it is easy to deduce that no matter how friendly the cast members are to one another, and some are on very good terms, there is still a certain level of competition. After all, even in the modern age being a Bond girl is still something fairly special as it means that they’ve become part of a franchise that’s been running for decades now. The shine hasn’t completely come off the glamorous role of being a “Bond girl”.
The changing of the roles and how they interact with the main characters definitely has something to do with. But here is what’s been going on for the women that played the most major roles in the film Spectre.
Naomie Harris – Eve Moneypenny
This isn’t the first Bond movie that Harris has been in since she took over the role of Moneypenny in Skyfall as well. Apart from that she also had the chance to play the role of Tia Dalma in two of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. During the same year that Spectre came out she was also seen in the movie Southpaw as a social worker that was handling the case of Billy Hope and his daughter after his wife had been killed and he’d slipped into a spiral of misguided anguish. After Spectre however she’s only been seen in a few movies, one of which was the recent flick with Dwayne Johnson, the movie made from the popular video game, Rampage. She will also have a voice role in the upcoming film Mowgli, which will be another take on the classic tale, The Jungle Book.
Monica Belluci – Lucia Sciarra
Monica Bellucci has had a long and successful career before her turn as a Bond girl, as she’s been seen in a number of different films from abroad and, if you remember correctly, she was in two of the Matrix films. She was also in the Passion of the Christ as Mary Magdelene, and was even in the Brothers Grimm as well. Since her stint in Spectre however she has only been seen in a few films, appearing in Mozart in the Jungle, On the Milky Road, and Twin Peaks. Her acting career has spanned for long enough that she doesn’t really have anything to prove any longer, but it’s always pleasant to see her show up on occasion as she’s a great actress and is a stunning addition to any cast.
Lea Seydoux – Madeleine Swann
It turns out that Lea has actually had a rather full career for someone that started up in 2006. She’s been in quite a few films, not the least of which are Inglorious Basterds and the version of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe as the titular character. She was also in Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, and after Spectre showed up in a small handful of movies that are no doubt still important but have not seemed to hit the same level of fame as several others she’s been in.
Bond girls have come and gone since the franchise started but thankfully they’ve been seen as more than eye candy for some time now. There’s no doubt that they’re still picked for their looks, but they’re also being picked for their talent as well as their ability to play a strong, independent woman in a film that is dominated by men. You could say that the Bond women of the past were the same, but it still stands to reason that they were seen more as objects than as people more often than not. Today’s Bond girls are seen as powerful, intelligent females that don’t necessarily need a man but will accept the help that is given.
