Analyzing the story behind the Adventure Time ending song isn’t too hard, but it’s not exactly something that a lot of people gave a lot of thought to largely because they simply enjoyed the show. If you don’t know by now, Adventure Time is an animated TV series that was created by Pendleton Ward for the Cartoon Network. It premiered in 2010 and is apparently going to be finishing up with its tenth season this year, thereby signalling its departure. The show focuses on the adventures of a boy named Finn and his best friend Jake who make their way through the post-apocalyptic world of Ooo. They interact with several characters during their adventures and have gained a massive following over the years. One obvious source that the series used was Dungeons & Dragons as the theme is quite easy to see. But it’s drawn from a wider variety of sources as well.
The ending theme.
The origin of this song is quite simple, it’s drawn from The Christmas Song, or the Island Song if you prefer, and the ending theme is not typically heard on the show since it is too long and the network found the need to save time. On the DVD of each season however fans can hear the theme in its entirety. Also the ending them doesn’t feature the main characters, instead showing a small number of insects as it meanders on. It does exemplify the feeling of the show however and describes the adventures that the main characters seem to take from time to time. It is a little drawn out however since most ending themes don’t generally take more than a minute or two. But the charm of it is that the ending them is kind of ode to the show in a way.
The analysis.
This is pretty easy really. The song says just what it’s about and what the desire is. If there’s something to be read behind the words then it’s likely that a fan would know a whole lot more since they’d have watched the show and possibly know everything it had to offer and why it would end in a theme such as this. The theme is light, airy, and definitely geared towards a sense of calm that is meant to make people feel composed and at ease with themselves. In a way it’s almost a theme you might expect from an 80’s video game after you’ve beaten the game and are watching the credits roll by. Of course in this day and age it seems kind of odd to put into anything but a children’s cartoon but even then it might sound a bit off just because it’s not quite as gung-ho as the series sounds at times.
Adventure Time is without a doubt one of the more successful shows to have come along in the past decade and it was kind of a surprise hit since it is kind of a simple show and one that Cartoon Network had to work to make popular. But once it hit the target audience there was no stopping it since as it happens with some shows people locked onto it and wanted more. Each episode didn’t even span a half hour so it was necessary to show two episodes back to back to fill a time slot. But even then people continued to clamber about and demand more and more content. That’s a big part of what helped the show to succeed and become one of the best known cartoon series worldwide at this point. Now that it’s ending this year people are no doubt going to be wondering if it will ever come back for a reboot or if the show had its time and is finally reaching its well-deserved terminus.
Cartoons have certainly changed throughout the years, though if it’s for the better or worse is hard to know sometimes. In the case of Adventure Time it’s not really possible to say much against it as it’s not the most violent of cartoons and yet it does have some content you might want to preview before allowing your kids to watch. Overall though it’s not a bad cartoon and does manage to entertain those that watch it. In fact if a person were to ever attend a Comic Con or similar convention they would likely see that Adventure Time is well-represented by many fans and is a mainstay at many booths that sell various merchandise having to do with the show. How it became this big and why are still questions that would be best answered by the fans, but the reality is that when Adventure Time does go off the air there will be a lot of people that likely won’t know what to do with themselves, at least until the next show comes along.
