Since the recent revelation that Joss Whedon won’t be writing and directing Batgirl anymore, folks have been wondering who would write Batgirl from here on in. Well, even more interestingly, one innovative author/comic book writer decided to reach out on Twitter to DC Comics regarding the open position. And, believe it or not, she received a rather unexpected response from an executive at Warner Brothers.
No Story Ideas for Whedon
Is it true that Warner Bros. may have found a new writer for Batgirl on Social Media?! Well, in spite of the recent rumors about Batgirl being one of WB’s next big projects for them to really focus on, the film has lost its writer/director when Joss Whedon made the decision to simply walk away from this particular adaptation of a DC Comic. According to Whedon, the decision resulted from the fact that he didn’t have any story ideas. It probably was, however, more because of Justice League and what happened to that film. In addition, it would seem that moviegoers just might have a preference for a creative team made up of women behind the camera on a movie that obviously revolves around a female character like Barbara Gordon.
An Author & Comic Book Writer
So, even as the studio searches for a female director for Batgirl, the film could possibly have already discovered a writer for the project. And, it occurred in an unexpected place, too. Roxane Gay is the author of a comic book called “World of Wakanda” for Marvel Comics. It received a great deal of praise for how it portrayed the LGBTQ characters in the story. In addition, Gay wrote several books, including “Hunger” and “An Untamed State”, as well as a best-selling essay collection called “Bad Feminist ” for The New York Times.
Gay Offers Her Services
Now, Gay has offered her services for writing Batgirl and, lo and behold, she actually got a response from Michele Wells. Ms. Wells is the VP of Content Strategy for DC Entertainment. And, the entire exchange was on social media! This doesn’t necessarily mean that it will really happen but nevertheless, it’s definitely an interesting situation albeit somewhat unbelievable that the film company would be willing to discuss it with anyone who is throwing their name into the ring on social media. But then again, if Ms. Gay were to turn out to be a good fit, maybe it’s not such a bad idea. For now, it looks like everybody will just have to wait and see since stranger things have happened. And. that’s the magic of showbiz. Right?
Just a Short Exchange on Social Media
In the actual social media exchange, Roxane Gay told DC Comics that she could write their Batgirl movie, no problem. And, it got 28.5K views! Then Michele Wells replied, saying that, if Gay was really serious, to contact her and gave her the email address, which BTW, we all have now so maybe we should apply for the job, too. Anyway, Gay answered her back and said that she was indeed serious and would email her. And the rest may very well turn out to be moviemaking history!
