Do you get the feeling that people were actually salivating when it came time for Darren Aronofsky’s film Mother! to get the Honest Trailer treatment? I’ve not seen the movie thus far and from the previews I really don’t plan to since nothing seems to make sense and it was apparently designed that way. Kudos to Aronofsky for getting another one of his visions onto the big screen but perhaps he should have thought about making a short film to see what the reception was like before going full bore and flat out boring those audience members that WEREN’T horribly confused by this experience.
I get the idea of not wanting to reveal too much to the audience, that seems to kill a lot of movies and give the idea that a person will know everything before their butt hits the seat in the theater. But giving everything in the trailer a jumbled, almost lackadaisical feel of someone that’s trying to make heads or tails of something that they can’t understand is a whirlwind of a headache waiting to happen. Just looking at the preview the movie looks like something that might bore a person to tears or to a nap by acting as one of the most inane and misunderstood stories of the whole year. The initial reviews were horrible and they didn’t get much better since the movie was considered to be one of the worst flops of 2017. And that’s saying something since the summer and the fall movies were rife with those that had no chance of standing on their own two feet, much less competing with anything else.
Mother! was so reviled in fact that it was out on iTunes long before I thought it would be, which is impressive since even movies that have a moderate amount of interest in them don’t tend to make it out for rent or purchase that quickly. This indicates that the film was no longer desired in the theaters and might have been forcibly pushed out the door so that it could go clutter up someone else’s shelf at a later date. That’s what you call a really, REALLY bad movie. Maybe it would have been better as a straight to DVD movie.
Apparently some people loved it though, which isn’t too surprising. Most movies that are this reviled will also have those that love it because it’s reviled or because they see something in it that they claim others won’t even bother to look for. Sorry, but any movie that has to do with eating a baby, that’s not a zombie movie in nature, is something uniquely disturbing that I don’t think I could throw my support towards. I get the feeling that a lot of people thought this way as well. Aranofsky has produced great films in the past but this can’t possibly be considered as one of them. If it were to win a Razzie I wouldn’t really be too surprised.
When the previews look so bad that you’d rather pass on it you know it’s a bad movie.
