Regarded as one of the most successful British pop groups of the 80s, Spandau Ballet attained global success with their massively popular hit song, “True“. The song was released in 1983 as the title track on their third album. It earned the number one spot on the UK chart and made it to the US Billboard Hot 100.
“True” has become such a phenomenon that it has been used in several movies, for weddings and other pivotal scenes. So powerful, since its release, the song has become one of the most used songs through the years. Here are the top five uses of Spandau Ballet’s “True” in movies.
Sixteen Candles (1984)
Sixteen Candles features Spandau Ballet’s “True”, which had only been out for a year at the time the film was released. It was played as the song for the backdrop during the scene of the school dance. We only hear it for about a minute, but it is known as the song that inspired the look that helped Molly Ringwald to be chosen as the main event for a cover of Time Magazine in the 80s. She is seen staring wistfully at Jake as he dances with another girl.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Steve Buscemi’s character sang the song at the wedding of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s characters in The Wedding Singer (1998). Sandler plays the role of a guy that sings at weddings and bar mitzvahs for a living, while Barrymore is a waitress for the catering service that serves the guests. Working for the same company, the two met and became friends. Both were engaged to other people at the time. It didn’t appear that there would be a romance between them. However, as expected of some relationships, things went south for both characters. Sandler’s fiance ditched him at the altar on the day of the wedding, while Drew Barrymore’s character chose the wedding singer over her lying, cheating fiancé just before their weddings.
Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
In this parody film, Not Another Teen Movie, featuring a collage of different popular teen movies, the song “True” plays in the background. Viewers can hear it midway through the scene where Mia Kirshner’s character shares a passionate (or gross) kiss with Beverly Polcyn’s character. This isn’t an appropriate clip for all audiences, but it’s one of the uses of the Spandau Ballet’s song “True”.
Pixels (2015)
Spandau Ballet’s “True” is played during the proposal scene in Pixels (2015). As the Indian man is about to propose in front of the Taj Mahal, he plays the song on his phone for the needed romantic feel. However, as he drops to one knee and raises the ring for his lady, a Hindu version of the song begins to play.
The Lost City (2022)
Spandau Ballet’s “True” can be heard in the The Lost City‘s opening scene. When Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) works on her next novel draft, she imagines her book’s heroine Dr. Angela Lovemore being alone with the book’s hero Dash McMahon (Channing Tatum). Spandau Ballet‘s “True” is heard playing in the background as they speak to each other, just before her narration adds a villain and snakes to the scene.
