There Needs to be a Documentary About the Struggles of Retirement

Not enough thought is really put into how much many people really struggle with retirement. So many people are focused on the here and now that trying to look ahead just doesn’t work all the time. If you try to focus on what’s coming then you lose what’s here now. Retirement is something a lot of people generally don’t think of until it’s too late. Even those that do plan ahead find that life throws them a few curve balls when they’re not looking.

How do you stop it though? How do you stop life from hitting you so hard when you think you’ve got everything stabilized? The answer is that you can’t. There’s really no way to anticipate every little thing that could happen to you down the line. Even those that start early and think they have everything handled don’t always get to that point and feel safe. Some people might have a hundred thousand or more in the bank, but that isn’t a safe bet to help you the rest of your life.

For one thing, no one really knows how long they’re going to live. We don’t come with an expiration date stamped on our feet when we’re born. No man knoweth the hour so to speak, and so we’re left wondering how we’re going to survive as he continue to travel along the course on which we’re set. If we don’t work we don’t get paid, if we don’t get paid we need to find help, and at the end of the day no one really wants to depend on anyone else when they reach retirement age. At that age most people want to know that they’ve done all that they can and are now eligible to just kick back and relax.

It’s not always that easy.

Some people will be working until they’re old and gray, some will work even beyond that. We try to make the best decisions for our future and hope that life will be kind. Saving up for retirement just isn’t as easy as used to be. The cost of living keeps going up. Bills keep getting more expensive, food is more expensive, property taxes go up and so on and so forth. We’re not living in an age of luxury right now, at least not those that are middle close to poverty class. We’re living in an era in which the average retiree won’t have enough left in savings to survive on without assistance.

And yet so few people are talking about it. Little to nothing is being done to inform people or allow them to know that there might be a way to avoid hitting the poverty level once the time for retirement comes around. It’s vital for people to understand what they can do, to learn from others that are going through the same thing, and to keep them all informed of what might help to alleviate the worry of having nothing in one’s retirement. There are steps to take and safeguards that could help a great many people, but the idea is to get the word out and make them aware, not just ignore it and hope things get better.
