Avatar Sequels Production Begins with a Budget of $1 Billion

What a lot of fans have been waiting for has finally happened. James Cameron is about about to start filming the Avatar sequels. That’s right, SEQUELS as in more than one. He’s been talking about at least two or three sequels, but is now settled on four that will becoming out within the next several years. The second movie is slated to come out in December of 2020, while the other two will come out in 2024 and 2025. So we’ve got a while to wait yet.

While we wait though we can at least wonder at just what’s going to happen on Pandora since really and honestly we’ve only seen a fraction of the planet at best and have no idea if there are any other human outposts that might need to be uprooted. Plus, Jake’s inclusion into the native culture could still be an uncertain thing despite his immersion into it. There could be dissidents that don’t believe in his legendary status and could cause dissent.

Two of the most troubling rumors however are that Quaritch, the antagonist from the first movie, and Sigourney Weaver will somehow be coming back. Last time anyone checked they were as dead as could be. There is at least a glimmer of hope however concerning Weaver, as she became one with the tree of souls and is in some sense still ‘there’ but not in any form that would be recognized. Quaritch though was shot through the chest, the heart more likely, with two arrows the size of small spears. Unless the planet is keen on reclaiming all life and somehow manages to revive him I don’t see how he’ll be able to come back at all.

He was definitely a worthy opponent considering how ruthless and inventive he was, but if he’s fighting Jake and the others in anything but one of the exosuits that the soldiers used then it’s a very one-sided fight. Cameron has something up his sleeve however, and it should be interesting to see just what direction Avatar goes in upon its release.

Most of the cast will be coming back, along with the two already mentioned, but obviously some of the dead will not be returning either because their deaths were a little more final or there was no need to put any more strain on the resurrection theory that would be needed for the initial two. It’s rumored that the actor playing Norm will be back, as will those playing the blue-skinned Na’vi. It’ll be interesting to see how many new characters are introduced simply because a good number of those that were important in some way in the original movie are either dead or have been shipped off planet, presumably to head home with their tails tucked between their legs.

That however seems to be one reason why there would be so many sequels. The humans could see the Na’vi uprising as a sign to rally and come back in even greater force. That alone would cause a war that could potential devastate the planet and create an epic battle scene that would hopefully propel the next four films.
